Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear Gel,
I understand that you're having trouble signing in to the Office desktop apps with your school account.
In this case, I recommend checking your school license by signing in to https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=Harmony#subscriptions and opening the Subscriptions tab > Please verify which Microsoft 365 Education subscription is assigned to your account.
Note: If your school has assigned a license such as Microsoft 365 Education A1, this plan includes web-based Office apps only and does not include rights to activate the desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office apps. In that scenario, you can sign in and use Office in a web browser, but you may not be able to activate or sign in to the desktop applications. For reference: Microsoft 365 Education plans
If your subscription should include the desktop apps and you're still receiving the "Something went wrong" error, then the issue is more likely related to the Office installation, activation, or authentication process on your device. Here are some troubleshooting steps I recommend you try:
Step 1: Sign out of all Office accounts and clear Windows credentials
- Open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.
- Remove any entries related to Office, MicrosoftOffice, OneAuth, AzureAD, or your school email address.
- Restart your computer. For reference: Credential Manager in Windows
Step 2: Disconnect and reconnect your school account
- Open Windows Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
- If your school account appears there: Select it > Click Disconnect > Restart > Go back and connect it again > Try Office sign-in.
Step 3: Repair Microsoft 365
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Select Microsoft 365, click the ellipses, and choose Modify.
- Run a Quick Repair first. If the issue persists, run an Online Repair. For reference: Repair an Office application
Step 4: Verify date and time settings
Go to Settings > Time & Language > Enable Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically > Click Sync now.
However, if the issue still persists after trying these steps, since you are using an education account, I recommend reaching out to your school's IT administrator or help desk for further support and investigation. They can verify that your account has the appropriate Microsoft 365 Education license assigned, check for any device or sign-in restrictions configured by the school, and review any authentication errors on their side. Note: As this is a public community forum, no one here has access to your school's Microsoft 365 tenant, user account, licensing information, or administrative settings. Only your school's IT administrators can investigate tenant-specific issues and make any necessary changes.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to your update
