A free personal Copilot account can use voice when signed in, so an unresponsive waveform on both Android devices—after confirming microphone access, updating Copilot, and testing the microphones elsewhere—should be handled as a Copilot app/account issue rather than an Android microphone problem.^1^

    Reset Copilot’s local Android state

    On each device:

    1. Open Android Settings → Apps → Copilot.
    2. Select Force stop, then reopen Copilot and test voice.
    3. If it remains unresponsive, return to Settings → Apps → Copilot → Storage:
      • Select Clear cache and test again.
      • If that fails, select Clear storage/Clear data.
Clearing storage signs you out and removes the app’s local settings, but not chats stored with your Microsoft account.
    4. Reopen Copilot and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account previously used when voice worked.
    5. Tap the waveform/start-voice-chat control in the prompt box. That is the documented mobile method for starting a voice conversation.^2^

If clearing the app data does not help, uninstall Copilot, restart the device, and reinstall the standalone Microsoft Copilot Android app. Signing out and reinstalling are also suggested for Copilot voice faults where the app’s voice state stops functioning.^3^

Distinguish an account issue from an Android-app issue

    After resetting the app:

    • Sign in with the same account on another Copilot client and test voice.
    • If voice fails under that account on every device but works with another account, the problem is likely tied to the account’s feature state.
    • If it works elsewhere but not in Android, report it as an Android app regression. A closely matching Android report describes the microphone control becoming unresponsive after an update.^4^

Microsoft’s voice documentation is currently inconsistent across Copilot experiences: its free-Copilot page says signed-in personal accounts receive voice interactions, while the Microsoft 365 Copilot voice FAQ says voice features are rolling out gradually and are not yet available to users without a Copilot license.^5^ Because voice previously worked and the waveform remains visible, do not purchase a subscription solely as a troubleshooting step.

    Report the failure

If voice remains inactive after clearing app data or reinstalling:

    1. In Copilot, open the profile/menu.
    2. Select Give feedback or Send feedback → Report a problem.
    3. Include:
      • Phone and tablet models
      • Android versions
      • Copilot app version
      • Approximate date voice stopped working
      • “Waveform appears but does not react to speech”
      • That microphone permission is enabled and the microphone works in other apps

Microsoft specifically requests device, operating-system, start time, and screenshots when reporting persistent Copilot app problems.^6^
