We have an existing Viva Engage community called Community, which is connected to a Microsoft 365 group.

We need to change the associated Microsoft 365 group from Assigned membership to Dynamic User membership so that employees are automatically added to and removed from the Viva Engage community based on Entra ID attributes.

A requirement is that users must not receive an email notification when they are automatically added to the community.

We have already disabled the Microsoft 365 Group welcome message using:

Set-UnifiedGroup -Identity "Community" -UnifiedGroupWelcomeMessageEnabled:$false

However, users still receive a separate email directly from Viva Engage with the subject:

"You have been added on ergomedplc.com to Community"

and the message:

"You've been added to a community."

We tested both:

manually adding a user while the group was using Assigned membership

automatically adding a user through Entra ID Dynamic User membership

In both cases, the Viva Engage email was sent.

Could you please confirm whether there is a supported way to disable/suppress this specific Viva Engage community membership notification email at the tenant, community, or administrator level?

Our goal is to use Entra ID dynamic membership while adding/removing users from the Viva Engage community silently, without sending them a membership notification email.

Dear @Daniel Brkic,

I hope you’re having a good day.

Thank you for providing such a detailed description of your testing and findings.

Based on what you described, it appears that you have already successfully disabled the Microsoft 365 Group welcome message, and your testing strongly suggests that the email being sent is a separate Viva Engage community membership notification rather than the standard Microsoft 365 Group welcome email. The fact that users receive the same email whether they are added manually or through Entra ID Dynamic Membership points to the notification being generated by Viva Engage itself.

After reviewing the available Microsoft documentation, I have not found a supported tenant-level, community-level, or administrator-level setting that specifically suppresses the"You've been added to a community" notification email for Viva Engage community membership events. While Viva Engage provides a number of user-controlled notification settings, the available documentation does not describe an administrative control for disabling this particular membership notification.

Based on the testing results you shared and the documentation currently available, I am inclined to believe that this is currently expected product behavior rather than a configuration issue.

Since your requirement is to manage community membership dynamically without generating user-facing membership emails, I would encourage you to submit feedback directly to the Viva Engage product team. Your scenario provides a strong business case: organizations using Entra ID Dynamic User groups may need membership changes to occur automatically and silently, while the current behavior generates a notification each time a user is added to the community.

The feedback you have gathered through your testing is particularly valuable because it demonstrates that the notification is sent regardless of whether the membership change is performed manually or automatically through Dynamic Membership. This helps clearly illustrate the limitation and the business impact for organizations managing communities at scale.

Thank you again for taking the time to perform such thorough testing and share your findings with the community. I hope Microsoft considers this scenario in future enhancements to Viva Engage, as I can certainly understand the need to synchronize membership automatically without generating unnecessary community membership emails.

Warm regards,
