Check and reactivate the personal Microsoft account through the Microsoft services account reset page, because the earlier lockout followed by authorization failures matches the documented personal OneDrive blocked-account recovery path.
1. Check the personal account’s status
- Open the Microsoft services account reset page.
- Sign in with the personal Microsoft account that owns the files, not the school account.
- Complete any identity verification or reactivation instructions shown.
- If verification succeeds, allow up to 24 hours for a temporary block to clear.
Microsoft documents that temporary blocks can follow suspicious activity, unusually high traffic, or sharing a large number of files. A recently verified account or one affected by high-volume sharing may be unblocked within 24 hours.^1^
Sharing files with .edu recipients is not itself documented as a problem. The potentially relevant condition is the volume or activity pattern of sharing, not the recipients’ domain.
2. Test with an isolated personal-account session
Because both personal and school identities are used in Edge, eliminate any stale or mixed authentication session:
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) → New InPrivate window.
- Go directly to OneDrive.
- Sign in only with the personal account.
- Open My files, then try opening a file from there rather than from an old bookmark, recent-file link, school portal, or shared link.
Edge InPrivate mode supports OneDrive, provided cookies have not been blocked.^2^
If this works, remove the stale OneDrive cookies from the normal Edge session:
- Edge → Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Cookies → See all cookies and site data.
- Search for OneDrive/Microsoft sign-in entries and delete those site cookies.
- Close Edge, reopen it, and sign in with the personal account.
Deleting site cookies signs that browser session out but does not delete OneDrive files.^3^
3. If the account specifically says “Account frozen”
A frozen account is a different state from a temporary security block. It can occur when the account remains over its storage allowance for three months or has not been used for a long time. In that case:
- Sign in with the account that received the frozen message.
- Open OneDrive storage management and reduce usage or purchase sufficient storage.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the storage change to apply.
- If the account remains frozen after 48 hours, contact Microsoft Support.
Existing files remain read-only while the account is over quota.^4^
If My files still produces the same error in InPrivate mode after account reactivation—or on another device/network—this is no longer just an Edge-session problem. Similar reports with the exact “Unknown render failure” and “Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation” messages point to an account-specific authorization or backend failure.^5^
Because these are files in personal OneDrive, school IT generally cannot repair that account. Open or update a Microsoft personal-account support case and include:
- The Correlation ID
- Exact failure date and time, including time zone
- The personal account address, supplied privately
- Confirmation that the error occurs in Edge InPrivate
- Whether it occurs on another device or network
- The earlier lockout message and whether the reset page completed successfully
- A screenshot with personal information obscured
Microsoft directs personal-account technical issues to Contact Microsoft Support; organizational IT is the route for work or school accounts.^6^
Do not change Windows folder ownership or NTFS permissions for this symptom. Those controls apply to local File Explorer permissions, not authorization failures on the OneDrive website.
