An orphaned passkey is a passkey that still exists on a device or passkey provider, but is no longer registered with the account system.
For Windows, check these places:
- Open Settings on the Windows device.
- Go to Accounts > Passkeys.
- Review the passkeys saved locally on the device.
- If a passkey looks outdated or belongs to the site causing the problem, select ... next to it and choose Delete passkey.
Also check the passkey provider if the passkey was not saved locally in Windows:
- Microsoft Password Manager or another synced credential manager
- The account security dashboard for the Microsoft account type involved
If the issue is caused by an orphaned passkey, the supported cleanup is:
- Remove the orphaned passkey from the device or passkey provider.
- Re-register a new passkey after cleanup.
If the site is asking for a passkey that is not showing anywhere, common causes include:
- The site is preferring passkey sign-in even though no usable passkey is available.
- The sign-in is trying cross-device authentication, which requires Bluetooth enabled on both devices and both devices connected to the internet.
- The device does not have screen lock enabled; synced passkeys are not available without face, fingerprint, or PIN authentication.
If the goal is only to confirm whether Windows has a local passkey saved for that site, Settings > Accounts > Passkeys is the main place to check.
