A personal Microsoft account cannot simply be linked to another personal Microsoft account to merge access. If the old account is still accessible, a new email address can be added to that same Microsoft account as an alias, but that requires signing in to the old account first.
Since the old email is no longer active and the password is forgotten, the supported path is account recovery:
- Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper tool to identify the issue and follow the recovery guidance.
- If the username is known but the password is not, use Recover your account and enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name used to sign in.
- If the old username is no longer recognized, try any other email alias or phone number that may already be on that account.
- If the account has not been signed in to for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
If recovery succeeds, sign in to the old account and add a new email address as another username (alias):
- Go to the Microsoft account how you sign in page.
- Select Add email.
- Follow the prompts to add the new email address to the existing Microsoft account.
This keeps the same Microsoft account while allowing sign-in with the new email address.
