New Outlook for Windows - Microsoft Cloud Sync Engine desync / stale IMAP cache drops recent emails

Dear Support Team,

I am experiencing a critical synchronization failure with a third-party IMAP account in the New Outlook for Windows on a Windows 11 domain-joined machine.

Issue Summary

Until recently, the IMAP account was fully synchronized and displaying all incoming and historical emails normally. Following a recent background sync, the client continues retrieving new mails and dropped all messages from the last ~18–19 months. It currently displays only historical emails prior to that cutoff date and the new ones.

Diagnostic Verification

  1. Server Integrity: All recent and historical emails are intact and accessible on the provider’s webmail server and via direct IMAP connections on other clients. No messages have been deleted or archived on the origin server.
  2. Webmail volume is now 14Gb.

Microsoft Cloud Sync Caching Glitch:

Removing the account and re-adding it causes the mailbox to render instantly without performing a live sync, immediately restoring the identical stale snapshot missing the last 18+ months.

Performing an application __Reset / Terminate__ via Windows Settings does not clear this behavior.

Changing the mailbox password on the provider’s server does not trigger an authentication failure or re-prompt for credentials in New Outlook, confirming the client is decoupled from the live IMAP host and reading an orphaned/stale Microsoft Cloud Sync cache.

  1. Environment:

OS: Windows 11 Enterprise (Active Directory Domain-joined)

  • Client: New Outlook for Windows

Account Type: Standard third-party IMAP/SMTP over SSL/TLS (Ports 993/465)

Request

Please purge or force a hard resync/invalidation of the backend Microsoft Cloud Sync cache/session associated with this IMAP account so that the sync engine performs a fresh initial handshake (UIDVALIDITY scan) against the provider’s server instead of serving the cached stale state.

Alternatively, please advise how an end-user can force a bypass of Microsoft Cloud Sync to establish a direct IMAP TCP connection within this client build.

Thank you,

New Outlook for Windows does not support traditionally direct connections between the client and an IMAP server.
