Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
The supported path is:
- Use the Microsoft account recovery flow to identify the account and regain sign-in access.
- If sign-in is blocked, use the Microsoft sign-in helper.
- If more help is needed, use Microsoft Support through the account support flow.
- Support agents can’t send password reset links or access and change account details.
- After access to the correct Microsoft account is restored, check the BitLocker recovery key page:
- Open
https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey - Sign in with the Microsoft account
- Match the recovery key by using the first 8 digits of the Recovery Key ID shown on the BitLocker screen
- Open
- If the device was ever signed into an organization with a work or school account, also check:
-
https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey - Sign in with the work or school account
- Go to Devices
- Expand the device
- Select View BitLocker Keys
-
- Also check other supported storage locations for the existing key:
- A printed copy created when BitLocker was turned on
- A USB flash drive where the key was saved
- If someone else set up the device or turned on BitLocker, the key might be in that person’s Microsoft account
- If the recovery key is found, enter the 48-digit key on the BitLocker recovery screen. Hyphens are optional.
- If the recovery key can’t be found, Microsoft Support can’t retrieve, provide, or recreate it. In that case, the remaining documented option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options. Warning: resetting removes all files.
