For an Edge identity verification error during sign-in, work through these checks in order:
- Clear Edge sign-in data.
- Open
edge://settings/privacy
- Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear
- Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files
- Set Time range to All time
- Select Clear now
- Restart Edge
- Try signing in on the web first.
- If this is a personal Microsoft account, try
https://account.microsoft.com
- If this is a work or school account, try
https://myaccount.microsoft.com
- If sign-in fails there too, the issue is with the account, not Edge.
- Check verification and account status.
- An expired password, MFA problem, locked account, or disabled account can block Edge sign-in.
- If MFA details changed, update them at
https://mysignins.microsoft.com
- For a work or school account, ask the IT administrator to check whether the account is locked or disabled.
- Remove conflicting Edge profile data.
- Open
edge://settings/profiles
- If multiple Microsoft accounts are listed, sign out of the affected profile and try again.
- If the problem continues, remove the problematic profile, restart Edge, and create a new profile.
- Caution: Removing a profile deletes local browsing data for that profile, including favorites, history, and passwords that are not synced.
- Clear stored Windows credentials.
- Open Credential Manager in Control Panel
- Under Windows Credentials and Generic Credentials, remove entries related to
MicrosoftAccount or login.microsoftonline.com
- Restart Edge and try again
- Check whether browser sign-in is blocked by policy.
- Open
edge://policy
- Find BrowserSignin
- If the value is 0, browser sign-in is disabled and must be changed by the organization’s IT administrator
- Check Windows account integration.
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info and confirm the Windows account is connected
- For work or school accounts, go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and confirm the organization account is connected
- If needed, disconnect and reconnect the work or school account from Access work or school
- Reset the Token Broker service.
- Update Edge.
- Open
edge://settings/help
- Install the latest version
- Restart Edge
If the verification code is being sent to another Microsoft-hosted mailbox such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com, use two InPrivate windows so both accounts stay signed in at the same time:
- In the first InPrivate window, stay signed in to the account requesting the code
- In a second InPrivate window, sign in to the mailbox receiving the code and copy it back to the first window
If verification messages never arrive, account security flags or lockouts can prevent delivery until the account issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, collect this information before contacting support:
- Edge version from
edge://settings/help
- Exported policies from
edge://policy
- Screenshot of the error
- Network trace from
edge://net-export/
- Identity status from
edge://identity-internals/
- Whether the account is personal, work, or school
- Windows version from Settings > System > About
