If Windows 10 privacy appears to be compromised, take these immediate steps:
- Run a malware scan with Windows Security. Windows Security provides real-time malware detection, prevention, and removal. If needed, also run Microsoft Defender Offline, which runs outside Windows and can remove threats such as rootkits that hide from the operating system.
- Be cautious of scam or phishing messages. Threat emails claiming a device or account was hacked are commonly scams intended to steal money or information. Report suspicious emails as phishing and delete them.
- Secure the Microsoft account by changing the password and enabling two-step verification. Also review recent account activity and sign out everywhere if suspicious access is suspected.
- Check for unfamiliar software or remote-access tools. If a scam pop-up or fake support interaction occurred, review installed programs and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Review Windows privacy settings:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > File system to control which apps can access files.
- If a message says “Some settings are managed by your organization”, those settings may be controlled by a work or school account or an organization-managed device.
- Some desktop programs installed from the internet or media will not appear in the File system app list and must be controlled in the program’s own settings.
- Review general privacy settings:
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > General to manage the advertising ID setting.
- Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > App & browser control to review Windows Defender SmartScreen settings.
- Use safer browsing practices. On shared or public devices, use Microsoft Edge InPrivate windows and avoid entering sensitive passwords.
- If suspicious behavior continues, contact Microsoft support through official support channels.
Important: Support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can still work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
