Hello, does Microsoft still do account recovery? I have tried to recover an account for 3 weeks now but have not received any “we reviewed your request” emails. It is also impossible to speak with a human being without going through multiple menus

Yes, Microsoft still supports account recovery, but the process is fully automated and relies on the online tools and forms.

Key points based on the current process:

    1. Use the Sign-in Helper and standard recovery paths first
      • If the password is forgotten, use the standard password reset flow described in Reset your password (linked from the “I can't sign in to my Microsoft account” article).
      • If the password is known but stopped working, use the Sign-in Helper tool: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2214157.
      • If the username or email is not recognized, follow the guidance under My username and password have stopped working and related links.
    2. Use the Microsoft account recovery form
      • If normal reset options (email/phone verification) are not available, use the Account recovery form: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2288285.
      • Before filling it out, ensure there is a working email address that can receive messages about the request (this can be any active email, including a new Outlook.com address created via Create one at https://account.microsoft.com).
      • For best results, complete the form from a device and location previously used with the account (for example, home or office).
    3. What happens after submitting the recovery form
      • After submission, Microsoft sends the result of the recovery request to the working email address provided at the start of the form within 24 hours.
      • If the account cannot be verified, it is possible to try again, up to two times per day.
      • If the account is verified, instructions to sign back in are sent to the same working email.
    4. If recovery is unsuccessful or appears not to respond
      • If the recovery request is not granted, the guidance is to keep trying, up to two times per day, and to review the detailed guidance for filling out the recovery form to improve the chances of success.
      • If the recovery form is not usable because the additional security info is not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2214511.
      • For security reasons, support agents and advocates cannot send password reset links, manually unlock accounts, or change account details. Account recovery decisions are made by the automated system based on the information provided.
    5. When recovery may no longer be possible
      • If an account has not been signed into for more than two years, it may have been deleted and can no longer be reopened.
      • In compromised-account scenarios where security info has been replaced and the recovery form fails, there may be no further method to recover the account.

In summary, account recovery is still available, but it is handled through the automated Sign-in Helper, password reset flow, and the Microsoft account recovery form. If no “we reviewed your request” email is received, ensure the working email address is correct, check junk/spam folders, and resubmit the form (up to twice per day) following the official guidance.

    Hi Ryan,

Yes, Microsoft account recovery is still available, but it can only be done through the official recovery form:

    https://account.live.com/acsr

All recovery decisions are made automatically based on the information provided. If the account details cannot be verified, no “reviewed your request” email will be generated.

For security reasons, Microsoft support agents cannot manually unlock or restore accounts. The recovery form is the only available method.

Make sure the information entered matches the account history as closely as possible.

Please HELP! My wife's hotmail account has been blocked. This occurred after she received over 2000 spam emails in a day. She received a message at login saying her account credentials were at risk.

We have tried for the last 2 days to recover the account, but it keeps saying insufficient information. She's 69 years old, not technical and we've provided all the information we possibly can. The account was created over 20 years ago. It references a land line number that isn't even in service anymore. She has never changed her password, so there aren't any "other passwords" to provide. The form asks for e-mail addresses and subject lines, but she doesn't send e-mails from her account, she mostly receives shopping e-mails, pictures from people and verification codes.

The real problem is that she has lost access to OneDrive, and it has her grandkid pictures and a lot of personal documents. If she has to give up her e-mail, so be it, but Windows 11 pretty much forced the use of OneDrive. WE WANT OUR DATA BACK.

Is the answer a lawsuit to force Microsoft to return our data? Having a totally automated process that doesn't work and no access to a human to advocate on our behalf is a real problem.

As for me, I've decided to let my Microsoft 365 account expire at the end of the month. I'm going to purge all of my information out of OneDrive. My wife's experience has shown me that Microsoft doesn't provide sufficient support for its users or products. I can't trust Microsoft with any data.

Is there any way to get a human involved to recover the account or is there some magic amount of data to supply to recover the account?

One last point: The e-mail recovery instructions aren't consistent with the form. The recovery form request e-mail addresses for sent e-mails. The recovery instructions in the e-mail received state that the e-mails can be for received e-mails. Which is it?
