    Hello Margaret Johnson,

I understand why you want to make sure Microsoft no longer sends important messages to an email address you no longer use.

Could you clarify whether you want to change:

    • the email address used to sign in to your Microsoft account,
    • the address used for security verification codes, or
    • the address that receives Microsoft 365 subscription and billing notifications?

If you added the new address under Manage how you sign in to Microsoft, please check that it has been verified and, if appropriate, select Make primary next to it: Manage how you sign in to Microsoft

However, changing the primary alias may not automatically update every security or billing contact. You may also need to review the security information and billing details associated with the account.

For now, please avoid removing the old address until you have confirmed that you can sign in with the new one and receive verification messages successfully. This is especially important if the old address ends in Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com, because removing that type of alias may permanently delete it.

Please let me know which type of email address you are trying to update and what options you currently see on the Manage page. That will help to point you to the correct next step. Thank you so much for your understanding.

If this is a personal Microsoft account, update the sign-in email by adding the new address as an alias:

    1. Go to Manage how you sign in at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
    2. Select Add email.
    3. Add and verify the new email address.
    4. If needed, select Make primary next to the new address.

    Important points:

    • Any alias enabled for sign-in can be used to sign in.
    • An email address already used as an alias on another Microsoft account can’t be added.
    • If removing an old Microsoft email alias such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, or @live.com, that address is permanently deleted and can’t be reclaimed.

If this is a Microsoft 365 work or school account, the email address is usually changed by an administrator:

    1. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Users > Active users.
    2. Select the user.
    3. On the Account tab, select Manage username and email.
    4. Update the address and select Done or Save changes.

If the account is managed by an organization, contact the IT admin to make the change.
