    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognized correctly.

    2

If not, open Word again, go to File - Account, click the 'Update Licence' button to try to resolve the problem with that function.

    3

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

For this scenario, check these items in order:

    1. Verify the subscription is active on the correct account.
      • Sign in to Services & subscriptions and confirm Microsoft 365 Family is listed as active.
      • If Office was signed in with a different Microsoft account, it can show Unlicensed Product.
    2. Sign in to Office with the same Microsoft account used for the subscription.
      • Open an Office app and sign in again if prompted.
      • If needed, try any other personal email addresses that may have been used to buy Microsoft 365.
    3. Check for multiple Office installs on the refurbished laptop.
      • In Windows 11, open Control Panel.
      • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Search for office.
      • If more than one version appears, uninstall the version not being used.
      • Restart the PC, then open an Office app and sign in again.
      • Risk: uninstalling Office removes the apps, but not Word or Excel files.
    4. If Microsoft 365 came from a retail box or card, redeem the product key.
      • A paid subscription does not start until the product key is redeemed.
      • Use Office.com/setup or microsoft365.com/setup and follow the prompts.
    5. If Office still shows unlicensed, try the built-in activation fixes.
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Check Date and time settings in Windows and enable Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically if available.
      • Start an Office app as administrator: Start > type Word > right-click Word > Run as administrator.
      • Update Office.
      • If needed, check firewall, antivirus, and proxy settings because connectivity issues can block activation.
    6. For Publisher specifically:
      • If Word and Excel activate but only Publisher stays read-only or unlicensed, this can be because Publisher is being deprecated and may already be in read-only mode before removal.
    7. If the renewal date looks wrong or the subscription is active online but Office still will not activate:
      • For Microsoft 365 Family, contact Microsoft Support.

If documents are urgently needed, Office on the web can be used in the meantime at Office.com. Also, if Microsoft 365 is not activated, Office can enter reduced functionality mode where documents may open but editing is disabled.
