Remove duplicate Personal Microsoft Account alias tied to my email

One email address is linked to two Microsoft identities: a Microsoft 365 Family account (this contains my Copilot conversation history) and a Personal Microsoft Account (MSA) that the Copilot mobile app keeps signing into. I want the Personal MSA alias removed so the email only signs into the Family account and my Copilot history remains accessible.

    Hello Jason Lewis,

Has the answer provided by AI able to help you with this issue?

Before removing an alias, please verify which Microsoft account actually contains your Microsoft 365 Family subscription and Copilot history. Microsoft 365 Family is a subscription attached to a personal Microsoft account, rather than a separate account type.

Please sign out of Copilot, then sign in to each available identity separately and check whether you are entering the Personal or Work experience. Confirm that your Copilot conversations and Microsoft 365 Family subscription are visible under the account you intend to keep.

If the second identity is a work or school account using the same email address, the accounts cannot be merged. Renaming the personal account may remove the account-selection prompt but only do this after confirming that it is not the account holding your subscription and Copilot history.

Also, take care when removing an address ending in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com, because removing a Microsoft-owned alias may permanently delete that address.

If both sign-ins appear as Personal, or you cannot identify which account owns the Copilot history, you can contact Microsoft Support before changing either account. Because community members cannot view the account ownership, subscription records, or Copilot data stored on Microsoft’s systems.

Here is how to contact support:

    4. Select "Microsoft 365 and Office" under Products & Services, select "Technical Support" as the category, and click to confirm
    5. You can select " Chat with a support agent in your web browser " to access the chat window.

The supported way to stop the duplicate sign-in behavior is to rename the personal Microsoft account so that the shared email is no longer its sign-in alias.

    1. Sign in to the personal Microsoft account at Manage how you sign in.
    2. Add a new email alias, or choose an existing alias.
    3. Select Make primary for the new alias.
    4. Remove the shared email address from that personal Microsoft account.

This keeps the personal Microsoft account separate while reserving the shared email for the other account.

    Important details:

    • Microsoft accounts and work/school accounts are distinct by design and are not merged.
    • Aliases on a Microsoft account share the same password, contacts, subscriptions, and account settings.
    • An email address that is already associated with another Microsoft account cannot be added as an alias to a different Microsoft account.
    • If the duplicate prompt is caused by another organization having a matching work or school account for that same email, that organization must remove the address from their side.
    • In Copilot, personal and work account data boundaries remain separate.
    • If Copilot history exists under the Microsoft 365 Family/personal Microsoft account that is being kept, changing the alias on the other personal account avoids removing the account that holds that history.

If the Copilot mobile app keeps opening the wrong identity, confirm the app is signed in with the account that contains the existing Copilot history. In the Copilot app, personal accounts and work/school accounts are separate sign-in types, and the profile shows whether the current session is Work or Personal.
