Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
If the Outlook.com alias was removed and it was a Microsoft-domain alias such as @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com, there is no supported way to access that alias again, and there is no supported way to back up that alias’s inbox after removal.
What is still possible depends on where the mail existed before the alias was removed:
- If the messages were part of the same Microsoft account mailbox and are still visible after signing in with the remaining alias, back them up from Outlook:
- In classic Outlook for Windows, select File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
- Select Export to a file > Next.
- Select Outlook Data File (.pst) > Next.
- Select the mail folder to back up > Next.
- Choose a location and name for the backup file, then select Finish.
- If the messages are no longer visible anywhere in the mailbox after the alias was removed, the context does not provide a recovery or backup method for that deleted alias inbox.
- For Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, and Exchange accounts, email is normally stored on the mail server. In many cases these account types do not use a local
.pstfile unless one was previously exported. - If the account was configured in classic Outlook for Windows before the alias was removed, removing the account from Outlook deletes offline cached content for that account from the computer. That warning applies only to content downloaded and stored locally.
