Are you in the process of turning your local account to your Microsoft account?

If so, are you stuck at the step where it asks for "Windows" password? If so, this is NOT your Microsoft account password but your local account's password.

If your local account doesn't have a password, simply leave it blank and continue the process.

Connect the Windows 11 PC to the internet, select Sign-in options → Password, and enter the new Microsoft account password rather than the Windows Hello PIN.

Sign in with the changed password

    1. On the Windows sign-in screen, select the Network icon in the lower-right corner and connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Windows may require internet access to validate the changed Microsoft account password.^1^
    2. Select Sign-in options.
    3. Select the Password icon—not PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition.
    4. Confirm that the displayed account is the correct Microsoft account, then manually enter its new password and press Enter. Windows supports separate password and Windows Hello sign-in methods.^2^
    5. After the first successful password sign-in, go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options and configure the PIN again if Windows requests it. A matching Windows 11 case reports that one successful online password sign-in is required after changing the Microsoft account password before PIN and fingerprint sign-in are re-enabled.^3^

Changing the password again is unnecessary at this stage because that has already been done.

If the message says “You have tried too many times”

Stop attempting to sign in repeatedly. That message indicates account protection may have been triggered by repeated attempts, another person using the wrong email address, or a device/network issue. If it persists, use Microsoft’s account sign-in helper.[^4^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/manage/you-have-tried-too-many-times-with-an-incorrect-password-error-when-signing-in-to-your-microsoft-acc#summary "You have tried too many times with an incorrect password" error when signing in to your Microsoft account | Microsoft Support")

Also verify that the account name has the exact email spelling and domain—for example, .com versus .co.uk. If the primary email is not recognized, another email alias or phone number attached to the same Microsoft account can be used.^5^

If Windows still rejects the correct password

Try Safe Mode with Networking, where PIN and biometric methods are unavailable and the account password must be used:

    1. At the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power → Restart.
    2. Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
    3. After restart, select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
    4. Connect to the network and enter the Microsoft account password.^1^

If another administrator account appears in the lower-left corner, sign in with that account and review the existing accounts. Do not use password-bypass tools or attempt to circumvent the account password; Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or bypass a lost password, although its sign-in helper can diagnose account issues.^6^
