Didn’t realise I was using an old school account. This should’ve in theory been closed over three years ago. i have still been actively using that account until today and my documents were working. I had files that were regularly being updated. Recently had an update on something and it’s automatically logged me out of that account. I can’t log back in. I can’t find those documents. I can’t access them. Is there any way of retrieving these? I had a really important document on there that I desperately need access to.

    Hi H,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, I understand that you are using an Education account and that you were recently signed out of it.

Education accounts are typically managed by the school’s administrator, usually the school’s IT department.

It is possible that your account was disabled or closed by the administrator, which resulted in you being signed out and unable to sign back in. In this case, you will need to contact your school’s administrator or IT department to check the status of your account. You can ask whether they can temporarily restore access to your account so that you can sign in and download your important documents.

Once you have retrieved your documents, I recommend storing them in another location that you have full control over rather than continuing to keep them in the Education account. This can help prevent you from losing access to your files if the school disables or deletes the account in the future.

I hope this information is helpful.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

For an old school/work account, recovery depends on whether the account still exists and whether the files are still in that OneDrive.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check whether the files are still in OneDrive on the web
Sign in to the OneDrive website and use Search everything at the top. Search by:
      • filename
      • keywords inside the document
      • dates
      • places or tags
    2. Check the OneDrive Recycle bin
On the left side of the OneDrive website, select Recycle bin. If the file is there, select it and choose Restore.
    3. Check whether the file was saved under a different Microsoft account
If both a personal Microsoft account and a school/work account were used on the device, the file may have been saved to the other account. Sign out and sign in again with any other Microsoft account previously used.
    4. Check the local device
If the file had not synced yet, search locally using:
      • File Explorer or Finder
      • the device Recycle Bin or Trash
    5. If the organization supports it, restore OneDrive to an earlier point
In OneDrive on the web, select Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive. This can undo actions from the last 30 days.

    Important limits from Microsoft support:

    • Work or school accounts may have files deleted after 93 days.
    • If files are not found in search or in the OneDrive Recycle bin, they usually can’t be retrieved.
    • For a deactivated school account, the remaining path is to contact the school IT administrator/helpdesk. They may be able to investigate further.

If contacting the school IT team, provide:

    • the file or folder names
    • for photos/videos, the date taken
    • approximately when the files were last accessed
    • which device was used
