I've moved to Canada from the US and now need to pay for my annual subscription of 365 but I'm having difficulty paying with my Canadian credit card.

    Hi, @Michael Pomponi

Microsoft 365 subscription is tied to the country and currency where it was originally purchased. Because of that, the system won’t let you extend the subscription or set up auto-billing using a payment method from your new country.

What you can do instead is cancel your current subscription and wait for it to expire (or you can cancel it early if possible). Once it’s fully expired, you can purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription using your correct country and billing information.

An active Microsoft 365 subscription purchased in the US cannot have its billing address moved to Canada; let it expire or cancel it, change the Microsoft account region to Canada, add the Canadian card, and then purchase a new Canadian subscription. ^1^

    Change the subscription to Canada

    1. Sign in to your Microsoft account and open Services & subscriptions.
    2. Check the Microsoft 365 entry:
      • If it shows Expires on, wait until that date.
      • If recurring billing is enabled, turn it off and wait for expiration, or cancel the subscription.
    3. Wait until the US subscription is no longer active. Microsoft states that a subscription for the new region cannot be purchased while the existing subscription from another region remains. ^2^
    4. In the Microsoft account dashboard, open Your info → Edit profile info.
    5. Change Country or region to Canada.
    6. Open Payment options → Add a new payment method and enter the Canadian card:
      • Select Canada as the country.
      • Enter the cardholder name and Canadian billing address exactly as recorded by the card issuer.
      • If the postal code is rejected, Microsoft suggests trying it both with and without a space. ^3^
    7. Purchase Microsoft 365 again using the Canadian region and payment method.

Changing the account address alone does not update an existing subscription: address changes apply only to new purchases. ^1^

    If payment still fails

    • Ask the card issuer whether online or recurring transactions are being blocked.
    • If the account region cannot be changed, possible documented conditions include a region change within the previous three months, an account suspension, or an outstanding subscription balance. ^2^
    • For a renewal specifically being attempted in a different country from the original purchase, contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft lists this as the escalation path for cross-country Microsoft 365 renewal problems.
