Additional team and channel-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
Microsoft does not document or endorse a third-party product that performs an end-to-end migration of Google Classroom classes, assignments, submissions, grades, and files into Microsoft Teams for Education, so no specific vendor can be recommended from Microsoft guidance.^1^
Use a workload-based migration instead:
1. Provision users, classes, and rosters
Use School Data Sync (SDS) to create and maintain Microsoft 365 users, class groups, roles, and Teams rosters from the school’s Student Information System (SIS). SDS accepts supported CSV formats and OneRoster API data; it is not a Google Classroom content migration utility.^2^
- Export authoritative users, classes, teachers, and enrollments from the client’s SIS.
- Configure SDS using SDS v2.1 CSV, SDS v1 CSV, or OneRoster API, as applicable.
- Define identity-matching rules between source users and Microsoft Entra ID accounts.
- Validate the data and correct SDS errors or warnings.
- Enable Microsoft 365 provisioning to create class groups and associated education services.
If the client currently relies on Google Identity Management, SDS does not provide that source format; Microsoft directs those customers toward federation between Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra ID.^3^
Create Class Teams, not Standard Teams, because Class Teams provide education-specific applications such as Assignments. Class Teams require an Office 365 Education license.^4^
2. Migrate Google Drive files
Use Microsoft Migration Manager for teachers’ and students’ Google Workspace files:
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Setup → Migration resources.
- Under Self-service migration and import tools, select Explore migration & imports tools.
- Select Google Workspace.
- Connect an authorized Google Workspace administrator account.
- Scan the Google Drives and review blocking issues.
- Map Google users and groups to their Microsoft 365 identities.
- Set destinations to the appropriate OneDrive or SharePoint locations.
- Run the migration and review its reports.^5^
The Microsoft 365 operator must be a SharePoint/OneDrive administrator, Migration Administrator, or Global Administrator. The Google account must be able to install and authorize the Microsoft 365 migration app and access the selected drives.
Migration Manager moves Workspace files, metadata, and configured permissions into OneDrive or SharePoint. It does not convert Google Classroom coursework into Teams Assignments. FastTrack’s documented Google Drive scope also excludes items such as comments, ownership history, Google shortcuts, and content not owned by the migrating account.^6^
3. Recreate assignments and grades
Google Classroom assignments, rubrics, submissions, feedback, and grade history need a separate plan:
- Preserve completed historical courses in an accessible archive for retention and audit requirements.
- Recreate only active or reusable coursework in the Assignments app of each target Class Team.
- Attach migrated source documents from the destination SharePoint or OneDrive library.
- Export grade records from Google Classroom into a retention format agreed with the school; do not assume that a file migration will populate the Teams gradebook.
- Validate a sample course before migrating the full school.
Teams Assignments is the native destination for creating, distributing, collecting, and grading coursework.^7^
Evaluating a third-party vendor
A commercial product should be considered only if the vendor demonstrates, in a pilot tenant, explicit support for:
- Google Classroom courses and co-teachers
- Students and enrollments
- Topics and announcements
- Assignments, due dates, rubrics, and attachments
- Student submissions and teacher feedback
- Grades and returned status
- Identity mapping and duplicate handling
- Incremental migration and rollback
- Microsoft Graph permissions and least-privilege access
- Education-data compliance, data residency, retention, and deletion
Require a written migration matrix showing what is preserved, transformed, or omitted. Test one representative class and compare record counts, files, permissions, submissions, and grades before purchasing or granting tenant-wide consent. Microsoft cannot guarantee the security or migration fidelity of an unendorsed third-party tool.
