Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Use the Deleted Items and Recoverable Items features in Outlook on the web/Outlook.com to try to get the missing messages back.
- Check Focused/Other and Deleted Items
- If Focused Inbox is enabled, open the Other tab and see if messages were moved there. If they were, select the message, then Move to > Move to Focused inbox.
- Open the Deleted Items folder and look for the missing messages. If found, select the message and choose Restore (or Move to folder > Inbox in the mobile apps).
- Recover items removed from Deleted Items (web) If the messages are not in Deleted Items, they may still be in the Recoverable Items folder:
- In Outlook on the web/Outlook.com, in the left pane, select the Deleted Items folder.
- At the top of the message list, select Recover items deleted from this folder.
- In the Recoverable Items list, select the messages to restore and choose Restore.
- Restored messages go back to their original folder when possible; if that folder no longer exists, they go to Inbox.
Notes and limits
- Messages removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for a limited time (for Outlook.com, 30 days from when they were removed from Deleted Items).
- The Recoverable Items folder cannot be accessed from a mobile browser; use a PC or Mac.
- Avoid using Deleted Items or Junk Email as storage folders, because items there may be permanently removed after the retention period.
If the messages do not appear in Deleted Items or Recoverable Items, they have likely been permanently removed and cannot be restored.
