New email address having problems with sending to full address list/seen as spam

Hi all,

I am trying to send emails to a list of around 90 people. It's a fairly new email address that I have opened, although I personally have been using outlook for many years.

It is just to update a rural village about events etc. I am currently having to send emails to blocks of around 20, I sometimes have to verify and then it sends, but other times, it ask me to upgrade to Microsoft 365, I actually have this already, does it not include other email accounts you have? This weekend I couldn't send to all of them and it blocked the last message.

I understand the spam filters (although it doesn't seem to apply to my private account where I get loads daily) but it seems very unforgiving for genuine email accounts. I have even had people reply and then I have had a conversation with them in the hope that this could help.

Please advise how I can get past this..

    1 -- Yesterday, when you couldn't send anything, what exactly happened? Did you see a message on screen (such as a limit or verification prompt), or did a "bounce" (non-delivery) message arrive in your Inbox?

    If it was a bounce message, please copy the error lines. I'm looking for a code like 550 5.7.520 or AS(4810). (Please redact your email address)

    2 -- Can you send a simple plain-text message to yourself? One short sentence, no signature, no links, no attachment. Does it go through?

    3 -- Can you send normally using Outlook Web ( https://outlook.cloud.microsoft/ )

    4 -- Does the blocking affect all messages, or only when you send to the larger list?

    I had the same problem with a fairly new Outlook.com address, so I can explain what is happening. Outlook.com applies daily sending limits, and new accounts start on a much lower temporary quota until they build up credibility in the system. That is why your older private account is fine while the new one gets blocked or asked to verify.

    A few things that helped me:

    1. Keep the batches small. Around 20 at a time is sensible, and spreading the sends through the day helps too.
    2. Put the whole list in Bcc instead of To or Cc. It protects everyone's addresses, avoids reply-all chaos, and a long visible recipient list is exactly what spam filters flag.
    3. Add your regular readers to your Outlook.com Contacts, and ask a few of them to add your new address to their safe senders list. Microsoft's own guidance says limits ease as you communicate regularly with contacts.
    4. Finish verifying the account: phone number, alternate email address, and the Microsoft Authenticator app if you use it. Fully verified new accounts get trusted faster.

    On your Microsoft 365 question: the higher sending limits apply to the Microsoft account that holds the subscription, and they still vary with usage history. If the new address is on a different free account, its own limits apply, which is probably why you still see the upgrade prompt.     Keep using the address normally for a few weeks and the quota rises on its own.
