I've been using Outlook without problems for over a year. Now, when I click on the icon to open it, it asks for my email password. I enter it and it tries to "add" email and fails every time. Outlook never asked for my paassword before except at setup. Senior citizen here, not a techie and traumatic brain injury survivor. Can someone offer a fix that isn't too complicated?

First, sign in to your email on its normal website; if that works, repair Outlook (new) in Windows rather than repeatedly entering the same password.

    1. Test the email account outside Outlook

Open your web browser and visit the website where you normally access your email:

    • Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN: use the password for that Microsoft account.
    • Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or an internet-provider address: use that provider’s website and password.

    Try opening your inbox there.

    • If the website does not accept the password: the account or password must be fixed with the email provider first.
    • If the inbox opens normally: the password works, so continue with the Outlook repair below. This test is recommended for the same New Outlook password-loop symptom.^1^

Do not post your email address or password here.

    2. Repair New Outlook

Repair is the safest next step because it attempts to fix the app without removing its data.

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Click Start, then Settings.
    3. Select Apps.
    4. Select Installed apps.
      • On Windows 10, this may be called Apps & features.
    5. Find Outlook (new).
    6. Click the three dots beside it, then select Advanced options.
    7. Scroll down and select Repair.
    8. When Repair finishes, open Outlook and check whether your inbox appears.

Microsoft documents this Windows repair path for an app that is not working correctly.^2^

    3. If Repair does not work, use Reset

    Return to:

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Outlook (new) → Advanced options

Select Reset, confirm it, and then reopen Outlook. Reset returns the app to its original state, so you will probably need to add the email account again.^3^

    When adding it:

    1. Enter the full email address.
    2. Select Continue.
    3. Enter the password belonging to that exact email provider.

Microsoft’s documented New Outlook account location is View → View settings → Accounts → Your accounts → Add Account.^4^

If it mentions an “app password”

Only follow this branch if Outlook specifically says to create or use an app password.

Some non-Microsoft accounts—particularly certain IMAP or iCloud accounts—may require a special app password generated on the email provider’s website. That password is then pasted into Outlook instead of the normal email password.^4^

If no app-password message appears, do not create one unnecessarily.

    If Reset still fails

Note these two details before seeking further help:

    • The part after the @ in the email address, such as outlook.com, gmail.com, or the name of an internet provider.
    • The exact error message, with the email address and all personal information hidden.

That information determines whether the next step belongs to Microsoft, Google, Apple, Yahoo, or the internet provider.
