Files permanently deleted by emptying a personal OneDrive Recycle Bin cannot be recovered with “Restore your OneDrive,” so the remaining supported step is to check the Windows Recycle Bin and any other device or backup that may have held a local copy.^1^
- Open the Windows Recycle Bin from the desktop.
- Search for the folder or sort by Date deleted.
- If found, select it, right-click, and choose Restore. It returns to its original folder.^1^
- In File Explorer, search This PC for the folder name, picture names, or file types such as
*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.png, and *.heic.
- Check other possible copies: another PC or phone, external drives, Windows backup, email or messaging attachments, and any other photo service.
If the pictures were online-only, they were not stored locally and would not appear in the Windows Recycle Bin.^1^
Why “Restore your OneDrive” will not recover them
That feature is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers and can roll the entire OneDrive back within the last 30 days. However, Microsoft explicitly states that a file permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin cannot be recovered by this rollback.^2^
The redirect to Support may indicate that the subscription-based restore feature is unavailable for the signed-in account, but even if it were available, it would not recover items after the OneDrive Recycle Bin was emptied.
Remaining fallback
For a personal OneDrive account, Microsoft Support cannot access account files or provide recovery beyond the documented search and recovery options.^3^
If the photos previously existed as downloaded local files, a third-party disk-recovery utility may be a last resort. Stop writing new data to that drive first, because new data can overwrite deleted content. Recovery is unlikely if the pictures were always online-only or the laptop uses an SSD where deleted blocks have already been cleared.
