Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
On a new computer, the fastest path is to add the account again in Outlook and, if automatic setup fails, use the manual setup options supported for the account type.
- Open classic Outlook.
- Go to File > Add Account.
- Enter the Outlook email address and password, then choose Connect.
- If setup fails, choose Change Account Settings and update the account information.
- If Outlook still cannot find the settings, use Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually > POP or IMAP.
Important details:
- If the account password is correct but setup still fails, an app password may be required.
- Manual setup in classic Outlook is not available for Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts unless using POP or IMAP.
- If Outlook never asks for a password while adding an IMAP account, on the IMAP details page make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked.
- If Outlook keeps asking for the password, verify Caps Lock is off and that the username is the full email address.
If email setup completes but messages do not appear:
- Make sure the account type is correct. For example, a Hotmail.com or Live.com address should use Outlook.com as the account type, not Exchange or Microsoft 365.
If sending or receiving still does not work after setup:
- Run the Classic Outlook troubleshooters.
- If that does not help, use contact support.
