There is no officially documented one-for-one replacement for Dynamics 365 Remote Assist; the closest Microsoft-supported option for mobile remote collaboration is Microsoft Teams mobile with spatial annotations, while HoloLens 2 and deeper Field Service scenarios require separate evaluation.
What Microsoft recommends
Remote Assist and Dynamics 365 Guides reach end of support on December 31, 2026. Purchases and renewals were allowed only until November 1, 2025. After end of support, the applications will stop functioning, although their Dataverse data will be retained. Microsoft recommends:
- Microsoft Teams mobile spatial annotations for certain remote-collaboration scenarios.
- Mixed-reality alternatives available through Microsoft Marketplace for other requirements.
- Completing the transition before December 31, 2026. ^1^
Microsoft does not state that either option reproduces every Remote Assist capability.
Closest replacement for phone or tablet use
Choose Microsoft Teams mobile with spatial annotations when the requirement is:
- Live video between an onsite technician and a remote expert.
- Drawing or placing 3D arrows on equipment.
- Keeping annotations anchored to the physical space.
- Sharing guidance, photos, and videos.
- Inviting external vendors or contractors to a session.
The onsite user needs an AR-capable iOS or Android device. During a Teams call, that user selects More → Spatial Annotations → Start presenting; participants can then draw or place arrows in the presented physical space. ^2^
Licensing is an important constraint: at least one call participant must have a Dynamics 365 Field Service, Guides, or Remote Assist license. Because new Remote Assist and Guides purchases are no longer available, Dynamics 365 Field Service is the relevant currently purchasable licensing route to evaluate. External participants do not each need one of those licenses, but the Teams administrator must allow meetings with external users. ^2^
Where Teams mobile is not an exact replacement
Remote Assist also provided capabilities such as:
- A heads-up, hands-free HoloLens 2 experience.
- Voice-controlled operation.
- Field Service bookings and work-order integration.
- Placement of reference images and schematics in the technician’s physical space.
- Dataverse/Power Platform storage and process automation.
- Call artifacts associated with Field Service work orders.
These broader capabilities are documented as part of Remote Assist, but Microsoft does not document full feature parity for Teams mobile. ^3^
Consequently:
| Requirement | Closest path |
|---|---|
| Mobile video assistance with anchored arrows/drawings | Teams mobile spatial annotations |
| Field technician scheduling, assets, and work orders | Dynamics 365 Field Service, with Teams spatial annotations evaluated alongside it |
| Hands-free HoloLens 2 workflow | No Microsoft one-for-one successor is identified |
| Full Remote Assist feature parity | No exact replacement is currently documented |
| Third-party mixed-reality replacement | Evaluate products in Microsoft Marketplace |
Recommended evaluation
- List the Remote Assist functions currently required: mobile or HoloLens device, annotations, external calls, work orders, recordings, files, and Dataverse automation.
- Run a Teams mobile spatial-annotation pilot on an AR-capable device.
- Validate Dynamics 365 Field Service licensing and any required work-order workflow.
- Treat HoloLens, embedded schematics, and custom Dataverse automation as migration gaps rather than assuming Teams provides them.
- If those gaps are mandatory, assess Marketplace mixed-reality solutions or contact Microsoft Support before selecting a replacement.
Existing Remote Assist customers may continue using the product during its remaining support period, but it should not be adopted as a long-term new solution. ^1^
