Where are you trying to sign in? Are you setting up your computer out of box? Or are you trying to sign in via Settings > Accounts > Your info? Or on a certain app, or a certain URL? Please provide that detail as it matters.

What type of email address are you using for your Microsoft account, outlook.com, gmail.com, or a custom domain address, or is it actually a work/school email address assigned to you by your organization?

Please provide as much info as possible in order to troubleshoot this.

    Hi Sue,

This happens because Microsoft separates email addresses into two distinct categories: Personal accounts (like @outlook.com, @hotmail.com) and Work/School accounts (emails managed and provided by an organization or university).

The standard "Sign in with a Microsoft account" option you are trying to use is strictly for Personal accounts. It will always block a work or school email.

To successfully add your school or work account to your Windows 11 laptop so you can access your school apps, emails, and Office programs, you just need to add it in the correct section:

Click the Start button and open Settings (the gear icon).

On the left menu, click on Accounts.

Scroll down and click on Access work or school.

    Click the Connect button.

Type your school/work email address and password in the pop-up window.

Once connected there, Windows will recognize your school account and you will be able to use it properly!

This usually means Windows or the app is trying to use a work or school account instead of a personal Microsoft account.

Use the correct sign-in location for the account type:

A personal Microsoft account cannot sign in to a business service, and if a work or school account is used with Outlook.com, it is redirected to the work or school mailbox. There is also no synchronization between personal accounts and work or school accounts.

On the Windows 11 laptop, check whether an organization account is connected:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
    3. If an old workplace or school account appears and the device is no longer managed by that organization, select it and choose Disconnect.
    4. Restart the laptop.

If the account being used is actually a school or work account, password and sign-in help must be handled through the organization’s IT admin or the work/school account recovery options.

If the account is a personal Microsoft account and sign-in still fails, use the Microsoft Sign-in Helper tool. If the message says the account does not exist, the Sign-in Helper tool is also the recommended next step.
