Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Repair New Outlook first, and if the sign-in loop remains, reset its local state before adding Gmail again.
Repair or reset New Outlook
- Close Outlook (new).
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Outlook (new), select the three dots → Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Repair attempts to fix the application without removing its data.
- Reopen Outlook and try the Gmail sign-in.
- If it still returns to Manage account or remains stuck, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Windows recommends Reset when Repair does not resolve an app problem.^1^
Reset removes Outlook’s local app data and configured accounts, so those accounts and preferences must be added again. Mail stored in Gmail remains on Google’s servers. This reset has resolved a closely matching New Outlook problem where the Google sign-in page became stuck.^2^
Add Gmail again
After Outlook restarts:
- During initial setup, enter the Gmail address and select Continue.
- If Outlook opens without prompting, go to View → View settings → Accounts → Your accounts → Add account.
- Select the Gmail address and complete Google’s browser sign-in.
- On the Google permissions page, select Allow.
- Return to Outlook and wait for Done to appear.^3^
Gmail is a supported account type in New Outlook for Windows, so manual IMAP configuration or an app password should not normally be required for this flow.^4^
If Reset does not break the loop
Check whether the Gmail address is also being used as an alias for a Microsoft account. This condition has caused New Outlook to treat a Gmail address as a Microsoft identity and repeatedly return to the wrong sign-in flow.
If the Gmail address appears among the aliases in the Microsoft account:
- Set an existing Outlook.com address as the primary Microsoft-account alias.
- Remove the Gmail address as a Microsoft-account alias.
- Open New Outlook and authenticate the app with the Outlook.com address.
- Add Gmail separately under Settings → Accounts → Your accounts, then optionally make Gmail the primary Outlook account.
This alias-specific procedure applies only when the Gmail address is actually listed as a Microsoft-account alias; it resolved an otherwise persistent New Outlook Gmail sign-in loop after repair, reset, and credential clearing had failed.^5^
Do not use Classic Outlook credential-manager or manual IMAP fixes unless the application is actually Classic Outlook; those procedures target a different client.
