Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Your files are not deleted immediately when Microsoft 365 expires, but download the critical photos and documents to your Mac or an external drive now, then pay the past-due balance on November 3 through Services & subscriptions.
Protect the files now
- Sign in to the OneDrive website using the Microsoft account associated with the subscription.
- Download the most important folders and photos to your Mac.
- Copy them to an external drive as a second backup, if available.
- Open several downloaded files to confirm that the copies work.
- Do not delete the OneDrive copies merely because they have been downloaded.
Even when an account is over its storage quota, its existing files remain read-only and can still be downloaded. ^1^
What happens before payment
When Microsoft 365 expires:
- Your data is not immediately lost.
- OneDrive storage returns to the free 5 GB allowance.
- If you are using more than 5 GB, uploading, editing, and syncing can stop; existing files remain read-only.
- After three months continuously over the storage limit, OneDrive is frozen.
- After six months over the limit, Microsoft might delete the OneDrive files permanently. [^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")
Therefore, if November 3 is only a few weeks away, that is well before the documented three-month freezing point—but make the separate backup now rather than relying on the retention period.
Pay on November 3
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account connected to Microsoft 365.
- Find the past-due subscription.
- Select Pay now.
- Update or add a valid card or PayPal payment method if necessary.
- Select Next to complete payment. Gift cards, subscription cards, and Microsoft account balances cannot pay a past-due subscription. [^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription")
Microsoft 365 does not offer a standard payment-extension option; billing is handled automatically. If the account displays a cancellation or deletion date earlier than expected, contact Microsoft Support immediately:
- Go to Microsoft Contact Support.
- Enter Contact Support.
- Select Microsoft 365 and Office.
- Select Billing and Account Profile questions or Manage my subscription.
- Choose browser chat and sign in with the personal Microsoft account attached to the subscription. ^4^
Do not post your email address, card details, or account information in this public forum.
