Setting up a new refurbished HP laptop the setup used very old Microsoft account information (including a discontinued email address and provider and my name (surname which was legally changed) long ago .... now the computer welcomes my old identity and references my old account info.... is there a way to scrub the old account info from my new computer

That would depend if you can still get in. If you can, you can use the AI answer to switch it out.

If you cannot get in at all, a clean install is the only option.

To perform a clean installation of Windows 11 using the Windows Media Creation Tool. You do need to get access to another computer so you can download the Windows installation files into a flash drive, then use the flash drive to help your computer. Hopefully you have a spare computer, or you can have friend or family help you.

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

    =====================================================

Now these steps will  be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the computer's BIOS boot menu to have it boot from the USB drive.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11, making sure to choose "Custom install" and select the option to delete all existing partitions.

Once the installation is complete, you'll have a clean installation of Windows 11 on your computer.

Yes. The supported way is to switch the PC away from the old Microsoft account and then sign back in with the correct account.

If the old account password is still known:

    1. Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    2. Select Sign in with a local account instead.
    3. Complete the prompts, then restart the PC.
    4. Go back to Settings > Accounts > Your info.
    5. Select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
    6. Sign in with the current Microsoft account that should be associated with the laptop.
    7. Restart again.

If Sign in with a local account instead is not shown, first select Stop signing into Microsoft apps automatically, then reopen Your info and try again.

If the old account password is not known, create a new Windows user and use the correct Microsoft account there:

    1. Open Settings > Accounts > Other users and add a new account.
    2. Sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
    3. Sign out of the old profile and sign in to the new one.
    4. If files exist under the old profile, copy them from C:\Users\<Old_Username> to C:\Users\<New_Username>.
    5. After confirming the new account works and files are copied, remove the old Windows profile.

If the old identity is appearing because the Microsoft account itself still has outdated sign-in details, review the Manage how you sign in area and make sure any outdated alias is no longer primary. If a sign-in prompt appears asking Which account do you want to use?, that means a personal Microsoft account and a work or school account are using the same email address; those accounts cannot be merged.

If the old email address belonged to a closed Microsoft account, that address cannot be reused to create a new Microsoft account.
