Using New Outlook on Windows for professional communication and productivity
New Outlook for Windows does not currently provide the same-folder reply setting; use classic Outlook with an Exchange or Outlook.com account and enable When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.^1^
Configure it in classic Outlook
- Open classic Outlook for Windows rather than new Outlook.
- Select File → Options → Mail.
- Scroll to Save messages.
- Ensure Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder is selected.
- Select When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder.
- Select OK.
Afterward, replying to a message stored in another mail folder saves the sent reply in that same folder instead of only in Sent Items.^2^
This applies to replies to messages outside the Inbox. It does not automatically file a newly composed message merely because a folder was selected when the message was created.
Account limitation
The setting is supported for Outlook.com and other Exchange accounts. It is not supported for IMAP accounts. In classic Outlook, check the account type under:
File → Account Settings → Account Settings → Email → Type
If the account is IMAP, Outlook cannot redirect sent copies to the originating folder; use manual filing or folder-specific rules instead.^2^
