A BitLocker recovery key cannot be retrieved, recreated, or replaced by Microsoft Support. If the 48-digit key from the Microsoft recovery page matches the Key ID but still does not unlock the drive, the supported options are limited to checking every valid storage location for the correct key and, if the drive is damaged, attempting recovery with the BitLocker Repair tool.
Use this order:
- Verify the recovery key source
- On the BitLocker recovery screen, note the first 8 digits of the Recovery Key ID.
- In the Microsoft account recovery page, find the recovery key entry with the matching Key ID.
- Use the related 48-digit recovery key.
- Check all other places the key may have been stored
- Microsoft account:
https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey - Work or school account:
https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey - Printed copy created when BitLocker was turned on
- USB flash drive containing the saved key file
- If someone else set up the PC or enabled BitLocker, the key may be in that person’s Microsoft account
- Microsoft account:
- If the PC was ever connected to a work or school organization
- Sign in to
https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey - Go to Devices
- Expand the device
- Select View BitLocker Keys
- Sign in to
- If the drive is failing or damaged
- A matching recovery password can still fail if the drive has severe damage.
- In that case,
repair-bde.execan be used to decrypt the volume at the block level and salvage data from a severely damaged BitLocker drive. - This is intended for cases where normal recovery methods do not unlock the volume and there is no backup copy of the data.
- It cannot repair a drive that failed during encryption or decryption.
- If no valid recovery key can be found
- The encrypted data cannot be accessed.
- The remaining option is to erase or reset the device, which removes the encryption but permanently deletes the data.
Important points for the current situation:
- Removing the drive and connecting it externally does not bypass BitLocker. The same correct recovery key is still required.
- The serial number and model number do not provide a way to generate or obtain a BitLocker recovery key.
- Do not post personal details publicly. The serial number and contact information should be removed from public messages.
