If files suddenly cannot be saved in locations such as Documents, one likely cause is Windows Security Controlled Folder Access, which can block apps from writing to protected folders. A practical first check is:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Open Ransomware protection.
- Check whether Controlled Folder Access is turned on.
- If it is on, turn it off temporarily and test saving again.
If saving works after that, the protection was likely blocking the app.
Other common causes from Office security settings:
- File is opening in Protected View
- In the Office app, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View.
- Review the Protected View options.
- Files from the internet, email attachments, or potentially unsafe locations can open with restrictions.
- File or folder is marked read-only
- In File Explorer, right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
- Trust Center settings are managed by policy
- If macro, Protected View, or other Trust Center settings cannot be changed, the setting may be controlled by an organization policy. In that case, the IT administrator must change it.
- Trusted Documents settings
- In an Office desktop app, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Documents.
- Review whether trusted document behavior is affecting how files open.
If the exact message is “file not found” when saving to Documents, that can also indicate the app is trying to save to a location that no longer exists or is unavailable, rather than only a security block. In that case, try Save As and choose Documents again manually or save to Desktop first to confirm whether the issue is specific to that folder.
