I tried Snipping tool for the audio and video online meeting recording, for a few minutes, and it was working fine. Today had 2 hour google meeting and got a file of 5,25GB with no sound and video. Can I recover it somehow? It's very very important!

Hello,

Since the file is already 5.25 GB, there's still a chance it contains recoverable data. First, make a copy of the file and try opening it with VLC instead of the default Windows player.

The key is to check whether the file actually contains video and audio streams. Tools such as MediaInfo or FFprobe can confirm this. If the streams exist, the file may simply have corrupted metadata and could potentially be repaired. If no audio or video streams are present, recovery is unfortunately unlikely.

Also check for temporary Snipping Tool files in:

Plain Text

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.ScreenSketch_8wekyb3d8bbwe\TempState

Microsoft has indicated that temporary recordings may sometimes be found there after recording or save issues. [learn.microsoft.com]

Unfortunately, if the audio was never captured by Snipping Tool in the first place, it cannot be recovered later. This is a known behavior when audio capture fails during recording. [learn.microsoft.com]

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

Domic Vo.

If the recording file has no audio and no visible video content, recovery is generally not possible from Snipping Tool or Clipchamp unless the media was actually captured and saved elsewhere.

    What can still be checked:

    1. Check whether the original recording exists in Downloads.
      • For Clipchamp webcam or screen recordings, the original recording file can be saved to the Downloads folder or the browser’s default downloads folder.
      • If a usable original file is there, that is the best recovery path.
    2. Check the Recycle Bin.
      • If any original media file was deleted, restore it from the Recycle Bin if it is still present.
    3. Try the file in another media player or location only to confirm whether it is a playback issue.
      • If the file still has no sound and no video content, that indicates the recording data was likely not captured correctly.
    4. If the recording was opened in Clipchamp, inspect the audio track.
      • Open the video snip in Clipchamp.
      • Select Audio.
      • Use Detach audio to separate and download the audio file from the captured video.
      • If the detached file is also empty or unusable, the audio was not recorded into the file.
    5. For future recordings, verify microphone access before starting.
      • In Windows, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
      • Allow the app or browser to use the microphone.
      • After permission changes, refresh the browser or reopen the app.

    Important limitation:

    • If audio was not captured during recording, it cannot be restored afterward.
    • The context also indicates that in other cases, recovering media files is not possible if the original files were deleted or lost and backup was not enabled.
