Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
For a Hotmail/Outlook.com account that can’t receive email, use this order of checks:
- Check whether Microsoft cloud storage is full. If storage is full, email cannot be sent or received, and messages sent while storage was full are bounced back to the sender and are unrecoverable.
- In Outlook.com, check the Other tab, Junk Email folder, Deleted Items, Archive, and any custom folders.
- Check sorting and filters. Restore the message list to chronological order with Filter > Sort > Date.
- Check whether email forwarding is enabled.
- Check whether any email rules are moving, deleting, or hiding messages.
- If the account password was changed recently, update it. If the account was temporarily blocked because of unusual sign-in activity, use the account unblock guidance.
- If suspicious activity was involved, review recent sign-in activity for the Microsoft account.
If self-help does not fix it, Outlook.com support can be reached from within Outlook.com:
- Sign in to Outlook.com.
- Select Help on the menu bar and enter the issue.
- Scroll to Still need help? and select Yes.
- If sign-in is not possible or the steps do not work, use the alternate support entry point provided there.
For a public community option, questions can also be posted in the Outlook.com Community.
