Connect to the internet, sign in with the Microsoft account used for the Store purchase, and use the Activation troubleshooter’s Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro option rather than entering another generic key.
Apply the purchased digital license
A Windows 11 Pro upgrade purchased through the Microsoft Store app is supplied as a digital license, not as a separate download or conventional product key. The license is associated with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.^1^
- Reconnect Wi-Fi. Windows activation requires an internet connection.
- Sign in to Windows using the same Microsoft account that received the Pro purchase confirmation email.
- Sign in to the Microsoft Store with that same account:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select the profile icon.
- Check the displayed account and change it if necessary.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot. You must be signed in to Windows as an administrator, and this option appears only while Windows is not activated.
- If the troubleshooter finds the purchased Windows 11 Pro digital license, select:
- Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro
- Start upgrade
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet until it restarts and finishes. These are Microsoft’s documented steps when a Pro digital license exists but Windows 11 Home is installed.^2^
Do not retry the generic key. It is not the license purchased from the Store, and the offline method has already failed in this case.
If the troubleshooter does not offer the Pro upgrade
Error 0xC004F050 can indicate that the entered key cannot activate the installed Windows configuration, or that activation could not complete. Microsoft recommends contacting support if activation continues to fail.^3^
Before escalation, repair Windows without removing personal files or applications:
- Open Start → Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Approve the restart option and select OK.
- Let Windows download and reinstall the current version, then restart.
- Return to Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot and select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro again.
This repair reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings.^4^ Repair installation has also resolved closely matching cases involving a Store-purchased Home-to-Pro upgrade failing with 0xC004F050.^5^
If Fix problems using Windows Update is missing, it may be unavailable on a managed work/school PC or on a Windows version lacking the required updates.^4^
There is no need to disable Microsoft Defender for the activation-troubleshooter route. If a third-party antivirus product is installed, temporarily disabling or uninstalling it is relevant only before the repair installation; use that vendor’s documented procedure.
If the purchased Pro license still is not detected, contact Microsoft customer support while signed in with the purchasing account. Have the Store order confirmation available, but do not post the order number or account details publicly.
