Navigation Pane does not work when in Search Mode

The newest update to Microsoft OneNote has an issue. When a search is used, the navigation pane for sections and notes disappears. When this happens there is no way to identify what section or note you find (through search). This is important so that you know how to re-find a particular note. Please fix this issue so that there is a way to navigate back to the list of sections and notes when using or after using the search feature.

I am using OneNote for Mac and here is my Version 16.114 (26101123)

After opening a search result, press Esc or click Done, then click Navigation in the upper-left to display the notebook, section, and page containing that result.

    1. Select the required item in the search results. OneNote opens the matching page.
    2. Press Esc, or click Done, to leave Search mode. Microsoft documents both actions for ending a search on macOS.^1^
    3. Click the Navigation button near the upper-left corner.
    4. The two navigation panes should appear:
      • Sections on the left
      • Pages on the right
The current page’s notebook hierarchy should then let you identify where the result is stored.^2^
    5. To search again, click Search. OneNote’s documented Mac interface uses the same left-side area for search results and navigation, so the normal workflow is to finish the search and switch that area back to Navigation.^3^

    If Navigation does not return

There is no published Microsoft entry identifying this exact symptom as a known issue in OneNote for Mac 16.114 (26101123). If Esc/Done → Navigation does not restore the panes, treat it as an apparent build-specific UI problem:

    1. In OneNote, select Help → Check for Updates and install a newer build if offered.
    2. Reproduce the issue, then use OneNote’s Help → Feedback command or feedback control.
    3. Include:
      • Version 16.114 (26101123)
      • macOS version
      • Whether Esc, Done, and the Navigation button fail
      • Search scope used, such as All Notebooks or Current Notebook
      • A screenshot or short screen recording showing the missing controls

Microsoft directs OneNote for Mac users to in-app feedback for product issues and feature requests.^4^

This is a navigation/search UI issue, not evidence that sections or pages were deleted, so recovery actions such as restoring Deleted Notes or clearing OneNote’s cache are not appropriate for the reported symptom.

    Good day Will,

Unfortunately, when Search is active, the navigation area is used to display search results, so the normal notebook, section and page lists are temporarily hidden.

Additional information is available in the following resources:

Navigate your notes with OneNote | Microsoft Support

Search for notes in OneNote for Mac | Microsoft Support

I completely understand how these limitations in OneNote can feel disruptive. When you open a search result, not being able to immediately see its notebook, section or page location can make it difficult to find the note again later. It’s not just about aesthetics; these differences can genuinely affect how smoothly you work and navigate your day.

As a forum user, I hope you understand that I don’t have the ability to modify or escalate product issues directly. However, I strongly recommend submitting your feedback through the OneNote · Community. This is the most effective way to ensure your voice reaches the product team and can be considered for future improvements. Once you've submitted your feedback, feel free to share the link here in the comments. I’ll be happy to upvote it to help bring more visibility.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
