For the past two weeks I have been having trouble saving any sort of attachment from emails. My Job revolves around saving and sending documents and it has been very frustrating. If anyone has any sort of work around, would be highly appreciated.

Use Outlook on the web as the immediate workaround to download or save attachments, then isolate the classic Outlook client problem with the checks below.

    Immediate workaround

    1. Open your organization’s Outlook on the web in a browser.
    2. Open the affected message.
    3. Next to the attachment, select More actions.
    4. Choose Download, Save to OneDrive, or Download all.

You can then open, edit, and resend the downloaded file while classic Outlook is being repaired. In classic Outlook, also try dragging the attachment directly from the message to the desktop; this is a supported alternative to Save As.^1^

    Restore attachment preview

    1. In classic Outlook, open File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
    2. Select Attachment Handling.
    3. Ensure Turn off Attachment Preview is not selected.
    4. Select Attachment and Document Previewers and ensure the required previewers are enabled.
    5. Restart Outlook and test an attachment from a trusted sender.^2^

For Word, Excel, and PowerPoint previews, the installed application must be the same version as Outlook. The User Interface options in Outlook and those Office applications must also use the same setting—either Optimize for best appearance or Optimize for compatibility.^1^

    Test for an add-in conflict

    1. Press Windows key+R.
    2. Enter outlook.exe /safe, then select OK.
    3. Open the same email and test both Preview and Save As.

If attachments work in safe mode:

    1. Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
    2. At Manage, select COM Add-ins > Go.
    3. Record the enabled add-ins, then clear their check boxes. Do not use Remove.
    4. Restart Outlook normally.
    5. Re-enable one add-in at a time, restarting Outlook after each, until the failure returns.^3^

If safe mode does not help

    1. Install Office updates from File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    2. In Windows, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    3. Select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Change, and run Quick Repair.
    4. If the issue remains, run Online Repair. This is more comprehensive than Quick Repair.^3^

If only Office-document previews display “This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer,” and the Windows Firewall service is stopped, open services.msc, set Windows Firewall to Automatic, and start it. That resolution applies specifically when the preview error and stopped service occur together.^4^

If attachments also fail in Outlook on the web—especially from multiple computers—the problem is no longer isolated to classic Outlook. Record whether it affects old and new messages, internal and external senders, and the exact error, then have your Microsoft 365 administrator check mailbox or attachment-access policies and open a Microsoft support case.

Good day Aidan and I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’re experiencing.

Since you cannot save or preview attachments, please try the steps below:

Option 1: Test in Outlook on the web

This will help confirm whether the issue is only affecting Classic Outlook.

    • Sign in to Outlook on the web > Open an email with an attachment > Try to download the attachment or save it to OneDrive.
    • If it works there, the issue is related to the Classic Outlook desktop app.

Option 2: Follow the steps suggested in the AI answer

    • You can follow the steps to restore attachment preview, check for an add-in conflict and run a Quick repair or Online repair of Microsoft 365 apps.

Option 3: Check the file type

    • If the problem only affects specific file types such as EXE, BAT, VBS or JS, Outlook blocks them for security reasons. In that case, you can ask the sender to upload the file to OneDrive or SharePoint and share a link instead.

Additional information is available in the following resource: Blocked attachments in Outlook | Microsoft Support

    Option 4: Contact Microsoft Support

    • If the issue continues, I recommend contacting your organization's IT administrator and asking them to create a support request through the Microsoft 365 admin center > Support > Help & Support.

Note: In case you do not know who is your IT admin, kindly refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
