Need help "deleting" an email from suggestions

One of our clients recently changed his email. When I go to send him an email, his old email always pops up first, despite the fact that it is not in his contact and his contact has his updated email. Is there a way that I can delete this old email from the suggested emails that pop up? Thanks so much.

This is, of course, not how it is suppose to work. Outlook should always look in Contacts first for any suggestions.

If there is no "X" in the suggestion that you can use to remove the invalid entry (Microsoft removed this option for personal accounts), you can try clearing your Suggested People.

For Exchange Online accounts, recipient suggestions are now provided by Microsoft Search rather than only by Outlook’s Autocomplete cache.

    Hello,

Just open a new message and start typing your clients name in the To line. When the old email address pops up in the suggestion list, just hover your mouse over it and click the X on the far right side. That should delete it from your autocomplete cache so it stops showing up.

Current Outlook on the web may not provide a way to delete one suggested address; when no X appears beside it, remove it by clearing the account’s entire Expanded People Suggestions history.

For a personal Outlook.com or Hotmail account

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft account used with Outlook.com.
    2. Open the Microsoft account Privacy Dashboard.
    3. Find Privacy → Expanded People Suggestions.
    4. Choose the option to delete existing data.
    5. Optionally turn off collection if Outlook should stop building new suggestions.

This deletes communication-derived suggestions, not saved contacts. The deletion is irreversible, and the suggestions can take up to 48 hours to disappear. ^1^ ^2^

Before clearing it, verify that any addresses you need are saved under Outlook → People, because the full Suggested People history cannot be restored. The existing updated contact will not be deleted.

If this is a work or school mailbox

    1. Open Settings & Privacy for the work or school account.
    2. Select Privacy.
    3. Under Data options, expand Manage contact suggestions and discovery.
    4. Under Discovered contacts, select Clear data.
    5. Optionally set Discovered contacts to Off to stop collecting and ranking addresses from future communications.

Clearing this data does not delete personal contacts or the organization’s directory. An address supplied by the organization’s address book can only be removed there by its administrator. ^3^

    Less disruptive workaround

If clearing every suggestion is undesirable, compose the message by selecting To and choosing the client’s updated saved contact from Add recipients, rather than selecting the first autocomplete result.

If an X actually appears beside the old suggestion in your interface, it can be used to remove that one entry. If there is no X, use the privacy-dashboard reset above; the current cloud-based list may not support individual deletion.
