Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Items remaining in an Outlook.com Junk Email folder beyond 30 days are not expected; manually empty the folder, then report the retention failure through Outlook.com’s in-app support because there is no user-configurable retention setting to repair it.
Clear the existing messages
In Outlook.com:
- Open Junk Email.
- Review the folder for any legitimate messages.
- Right-click Junk Email in the folder list and select Empty folder.
Alternatively, select individual messages and press Shift+Delete to permanently delete them. Microsoft states that items in Junk are automatically deleted after 30 days and documents Empty Folder as the immediate manual cleanup option.^1^
Caution: Emptying the folder or using Shift+Delete permanently removes the selected mail.
Report the automatic-deletion failure
The current Outlook.com known-issues page does not list Junk Email retention as an active known issue.^2^ Treat continued recurrence as an account-specific service problem:
- Sign in to Outlook.com in a desktop browser.
- Select Help on the top menu.
- Search for a phrase such as Junk email not automatically deleted after 30 days.
- Scroll to Still need help? and select Yes.
- Include:
- The oldest message date visible in Junk.
- When the behavior was first noticed.
- A screenshot of the folder banner and old messages, with personal information obscured.
- Whether messages older than 30 days reappear after manually emptying the folder.
That is Microsoft’s supported contact route for Outlook.com account problems.^3^
There is no documented Outlook.com setting that lets a personal-account user change or re-enable the Junk retention period. Rules that move mail elsewhere would change where messages accumulate, but they would not repair the Junk folder’s server-side cleanup.
