A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Copilot in OneNote for Mac requires a Microsoft Copilot work/business license; an eligible Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription supports Copilot in OneNote on Windows only, not on Mac.^1^
1. Verify the account and license
- Personal or Family account: There is currently no setting that enables Copilot inside OneNote for Mac. Use OneNote on Windows, or use an eligible work account with a Microsoft Copilot business license.
- Work or school account: Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to confirm that:
- A qualifying Microsoft 365 base license is assigned.
- A Microsoft Copilot license and its required service plans are assigned to the same account used in OneNote.
- OneNote is signed in with that work account rather than another personal or organizational account.
Microsoft’s requirements specify that licensed Copilot capabilities require both a qualifying subscription and a Microsoft Copilot license.^2^
After confirming eligibility, open OneNote → Home → Copilot. On Mac, Copilot should open in a side pane.^1^
2. Refresh the Mac activation state
If the correct business license is already assigned:
- Open OneNote or another Microsoft 365 app.
- On the macOS menu bar, select the application name, such as OneNote or Word.
- Select About <application name> → More Info → Refresh License.
- Close every Microsoft 365 application.
- Reopen OneNote and test Home → Copilot.
Then update Office using Help → Check for Updates, install all available updates, and restart the Mac. These are the documented Mac steps for a missing or disabled Copilot control.^3^
3. Enable connected experiences
Copilot in OneNote for Mac requires connected experiences:
- Open Word.
- Select Word → Preferences → Privacy.
- Enable:
- Experiences that analyze your content
- All connected experiences
- Restart all Microsoft 365 applications.
If these controls are locked or unavailable, they are managed by the organization; the Microsoft 365 administrator must review the applicable privacy policy.^3^
4. If Copilot appears but cannot connect
The administrator should check whether the organization’s proxy, firewall, URL filtering, TLS inspection, Conditional Access, or security gateway blocks Copilot traffic. Microsoft requires access to Microsoft 365 and Copilot endpoints, including full secure WebSocket connectivity to:
-
*.office.com -
*.cloud.microsoft -
copilot.cloud.microsoft
Copilot integrations can fail when secure WebSockets are blocked, TLS inspection interferes with the connection, or a proxy applies aggressive timeouts.^2^
5. Administrator-side diagnostic
If the license appears correctly assigned but OneNote still does not enable Copilot, an AI Administrator can run the service-plan diagnostic:
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Support → Help and support.
- Enter
copilot missing. - Select Run diagnostics, enter the affected user, and run the tests.
- If a required service plan is missing, assign it.
- If the admin center and diagnostic disagree, disable the associated service plans, save, re-enable them, save again, and rerun the diagnostic.^4^
If all checks pass and the problem remains, the organization’s administrator should open a Microsoft 365 support request and include the diagnostic results, OneNote version, macOS version, and whether Copilot works in other Microsoft 365 applications.
