What a mess! What a mess again and again!!

Microsoft asks me if my data is ok. I am afraid but I decide to update my phone number. I know I am going to open the Pandora box but let's go... and yes! here we go again: I am connected to one of my hotmail/outlook account but Microsoft wants me to connect again!!! Gosh, I'm sure some people must have commited suicide (or murder) after trying to update their Microsoft data!!

One of the options (to make sure that I am who I say I am!!!) is to send a code to another mail account. I know it never works but I try again. And NOTHING ever arrives at this alternative account (although it is another Microsoft account!!!!!!!!!).

And now I will have to do some meditation because it's time to go to bed but I am too upset and enraged about this whole mess that nobody never fixes at Microsoft.

Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!

For a Microsoft account, the most common reasons the code does not arrive at the alternate email are:

    1. The code was sent to the wrong mailbox. Email verification codes are only sent to the primary alias or to an email already added as a verification method.
    2. The message was filtered to Junk. Valid messages come from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
    3. Too many repeated code requests triggered a temporary block.
    4. The account or verification flow was flagged for unusual activity.
    5. If the alternate address is another @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com account, signing in to that second account can sign out the first account in the same browser session.

    Try this path:

    1. Check the alternate account’s Junk Email folder for a message from @accountprotection.microsoft.com.
    2. If the alternate email is another Microsoft account, use InPrivate/private browsing:
      • In one private window, stay signed in to the account requesting the code.
      • In a second private window, sign in to the alternate email account and look for the message.
      • Copy the code back to the first window.
    3. Avoid repeated resend attempts. Excessive requests can cause a temporary block.
    4. If blocked, wait at least 24 hours before trying again. If needed, wait longer, up to 1 week.
    5. If another verification method is listed, use that instead.
    6. To verify or replace security info:
      • Go to the Microsoft account Security tab.
      • Select Manage how I sign in.
      • Check whether the alternate email is actually listed there.
      • If access exists to another method, select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
    7. If no listed methods are accessible, at the Verify your identity prompt select I don't have any of these and follow the steps to replace security info.

Important: do not change all security info at the same time. That can restrict the account for 30 days.

Microsoft no longer allows you to add or change a phone number.

When (if) you ever can get into your account, you can remove the existing one and replace it with another verification method. I would recommend the Microsoft Authenticator App. Once it's setup, it's pretty easy to use.

send a code to another mail account. I know it never works but I try again. And NOTHING ever arrives

The "Email a code" verification method is usually one of the more reliable methods.

Are you sure you gave it the right address when prompted with the partial address? It doesn't throw an error if the address you give it doesn't exactly match the one on-file.

Check your Junk folder on the alternate email account?

If you still can't get a code, wait about 24 hours and then use a Private/Incognito browser session to try to logon to https://account.live.com/proofs/manage/additional and try Email a code again.

If you're just not getting anywhere, leave a comment on this Answer and we'll try something else.
