How to get bolded unread emails again

After a recent update, my Outlook account no longer shows unread emails bolded. I've tried all the on-line suggestions, including the one from 2025 on Microsoft Learn which said to go to Conditional Formatting (in View Settings) and find a list of rules, to include Unread Messages etc. When I select Conditional Formatting, there is only the message "Conditional Formatting Rules are not supported for the account." So, a dead end. Also, the VIew tab has no "Reset View" option. I tried switching to the Classic Outlook view but that made no difference to this issue.

My version of Outlook appears to be different from others; I don't have Microsoft 365 but surely it's not required to have this simple message appearance work properly.

Unread messages should appear bold automatically in Outlook.com; a Microsoft 365 subscription is required only for custom Conditional Formatting, not for the standard unread appearance.^1^

The message “Conditional Formatting Rules are not supported for the account” is therefore expected for a personal Outlook.com account: Microsoft limits that feature to qualifying Microsoft 365 work or school accounts.^2^ It is not the mechanism that normally makes unread mail bold.

Determine whether this is a browser-rendering problem

Since Conditional Formatting and switching Outlook views did not help, test the web interface directly:

    1. Sign in to Outlook.com from an InPrivate/Incognito window.
    2. Send yourself a test message and leave it unread.
    3. Check whether that message is bold:
      • Bold in the private window: clear Outlook.com site data in the regular browser, then disable browser extensions that alter pages, fonts, colors, or contrast.
      • Not bold in the private window: repeat the test in another current supported browser, such as Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari 16 or later.
    4. Temporarily disable ad blockers such as AdBlock or uBlock for Outlook.com. Microsoft notes that these extensions can cause Outlook.com loading problems.^3^
    5. If using dark mode, compare with light mode under Settings → General → Appearance. This determines whether the unread weight is present but difficult to distinguish under the current colors.^4^

Temporary way to identify unread messages

In the Inbox, select Filter → Unread. Outlook.com will then display only unread messages; select the Unread filter again to return to all messages.^1^

If unread messages remain unbolded everywhere

If the same result occurs in multiple supported browsers with extensions disabled, the evidence points to an Outlook.com account/UI issue rather than a missing setting. There is no documented Outlook.com control for restoring the default bold font manually.

In Outlook.com, select Help, describe that unread messages are no longer bold across multiple browsers, and proceed to Still need help? → Yes to contact Outlook.com support. Microsoft lists that as the support route for unresolved Outlook.com problems.^5^

    Include these details:

    • Personal Outlook.com account
    • Approximate date the behavior changed
    • Browsers tested
    • Whether InPrivate/Incognito produced the same result
    • Exact message: “Conditional Formatting Rules are not supported for the account”
    • Screenshot showing one read and one unread message, with personal information obscured

The message indicating that Conditional Formatting Rules are not supported for your account refers to the availability of custom formatting rules, not the default unread-message appearance. Since you also mentioned that the Reset View option is missing, I would like to clarify which Outlook application you are currently using. Are you accessing Outlook.com through a web browser, using the new Outlook application installed on Windows, or using the separate classic Outlook desktop application? Also, if you right-click a message that has already been read and select Mark as unread, does its appearance change to bold, or does it remain unchanged? Is this happening on an Outlook account or a third-party server account?
