Outlook web: last six years of inbox content missing

Last six years of inbox content disappeared. May be in conjunction with 365 Family subscription expiring, and storage capacity dropping (hence storage limit was momentarily exceeded). I have since made space available - well under storage limit now.

How to restore inbox contents?

If the mailbox is now back under quota, try recovery in this order:

    1. In Outlook on the web, check Deleted Items, Archive, Junk Email, and Other.
    2. In Inbox, make sure the filter is set to All.
    3. In Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder at the top.
    4. If the missing messages appear there, select them and choose Restore. Recovered messages go back to their original folder when possible; if the original folder no longer exists, messages are restored to Inbox.
    5. Search for a known missing message by sender or subject and check all folders, not just Inbox.
    6. Check mailbox storage in Outlook on the web at Settings > Accounts > Storage and confirm the mailbox is under quota.

Important limits from the documented behavior:

    • If email storage is exceeded, Outlook.com cannot send or receive email, and incoming mail is returned to the sender until the mailbox is back under quota.
    • Items in Deleted Items are automatically deleted after 30 days.
    • Items removed from Deleted Items are recoverable for 30 days.
    • Junk email is retained for 30 days before automatic deletion.

If the six years of mail are not in Deleted Items, Recover items deleted from this folder, Archive, or Junk Email, the available guidance does not provide a further restore path.

    Hello Savolax,

Thank you for explaining what happened. Losing several years of previously stored email is different from not receiving new messages while the account was over its storage limit.

When a Microsoft 365 Family subscription expires, the account returns to the free storage allowance. If the account then exceeds either its cloud or email storage limit, Outlook.com may stop sending and receiving email. Messages sent to the account during that period are normally returned to the senders and would need to be resent after storage is available again. However, the subscription expiration itself should not automatically remove existing messages from the Inbox.

Since you have already checked the folders and recovery options listed in the previous answer, please also review Settings > Mail > Rules and any Sweep rules to make sure older messages were not automatically moved or deleted.

Could you confirm whether the missing content consists of emails that were already in the Inbox before the subscription expired, or new emails that were expected while the account was over quota? This distinction will help determine whether this is a mailbox-content issue or undelivered incoming mail.

If previously stored emails disappeared in bulk and cannot be found through search, Archive, Deleted Items, or Recover items deleted from this folder, please contact Microsoft Support and request an Outlook.com mailbox investigation. Community contributors cannot access the mailbox’s back-end data or restore messages that are no longer available through Outlook’s recovery options.

You can also refer to Microsoft’s guidance for missing Outlook.com email.

I hope this helps clarify the next step. Thank you so much for your understanding.
