Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Since AT&T Mail is not a Microsoft-hosted account, the password must be changed with AT&T/Yahoo, not in Outlook.
What to do:
- Do not sign out on the phone if mail is still working there.
- That preserves the current signed-in session while troubleshooting the PC.
- Change the password with the email provider.
- For non-Microsoft accounts, password changes must be done on the provider’s website or through their help desk/email administrator.
- After the provider password is changed, update the saved password in Outlook on the PC.
- In classic Outlook, go to the account settings and update the stored password.
- If Outlook on the PC keeps asking for the password:
- Make sure Caps Lock is off.
- Confirm the username is the full email address.
- If the password was changed with the provider and Outlook was not updated, Outlook will continue prompting.
- If the account is IMAP in classic Outlook and setup never prompts for a password:
- Open Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts...
- On the Email tab, select New
- Re-add the account
- On the IMAP details page, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is Unchecked
If the provider still does not allow a password change, the next step is to contact AT&T/Yahoo support because Microsoft cannot reset passwords for non-Microsoft mail accounts.
