I wish to update my credit card details in order to renew my subscription to Microsoft 365, but am having issues with the new card details being accepted. Could this be because I am currently in a different country?

    Hi Simon Peile,

Being temporarily located in another country would not necessarily prevent the card from being accepted. However, the new card’s billing country and address should match the information held by the card issuer and the country/region details associated with your Microsoft account.

Please sign in to Services & subscriptions, locate your Microsoft 365 subscription, and select Manage > Change how you pay. When adding the new card, make sure the cardholder name, billing address, postal code, expiration date, and security code match your bank’s records exactly.

If the card was issued in a different country from the one where the subscription was originally purchased, please let us know the two countries involved, along with the exact error message shown. This will help determine whether the problem is a regional billing mismatch or a card validation issue.

If all the information is correct but the card is still rejected, please check with the card issuer first to confirm that online or recurring international transactions are not being blocked. You may also contact Microsoft Support for account-specific billing assistance, as the community cannot access payment records or declined transaction details. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Yes. For Microsoft 365 personal subscriptions, payment methods are region-based. If the subscription was originally purchased with a card from one country/region, a card issued in a different country/region might not be accepted for that existing subscription.

    What to do:

    1. Check whether only the card details need updating.
    2. If the new card is from a different country/region:
      • Change the account country/region first under Your info > Edit profile info.
      • For new payment methods, Microsoft states the country must be changed before adding the card.
      • For an existing Microsoft 365 personal subscription, changing region usually does not move the active subscription to the new country.
    3. If the subscription still will not accept the new card:
      • Let the current subscription expire, or cancel it if possible.
      • Then purchase a new Microsoft 365 subscription using the new country/region and the new card.
    4. Also verify the card details exactly match the card and billing record.
      • Name, address, postal code, expiration date, and CVV must be correct.
      • If the postal code is rejected, try it with and without spaces.
