Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
The customer’s authorized representative must contact Microsoft 365 business support for tenant recovery, unless Artisteeq already has active GDAP with the Service Support Administrator role and can open the request on the customer’s behalf.
Route 1: Artisteeq has active GDAP
Check Partner Center for an active granular delegated admin privileges (GDAP) relationship with this customer.
- If Artisteeq has Service Support Administrator, open a service request on behalf of the customer.
- Use a subject such as:
Tenant lockout – sole Global Administrator credentials lost – request Microsoft 365 Data Protection assistance - Include the affected administrator’s current, secure phone number and email address.
- State that all Global Administrators are inaccessible and that the existing tenant must be recovered without creating or migrating to a replacement tenant.
Microsoft’s partner guidance says this role is required to create a customer service request. For Data Protection cases, Microsoft will still work directly with the end customer to verify ownership.^1^
An existing GDAP relationship with Global Administrator or Privileged Role Administrator may instead allow Artisteeq to create or promote a customer administrator without Microsoft intervention. Do not attempt to establish a new GDAP relationship for recovery if nobody in the tenant can approve it.^1^
Route 2: Artisteeq has no suitable GDAP
The customer’s owner or another authorized customer representative—not only the external IT provider—should call the Microsoft 365 business support number for their country or region and request transfer to the Microsoft 365 Data Protection team.^2^
Use this wording:
We have an existing Microsoft 365 business tenant with no accessible Global Administrator. The original administrator credentials have been lost, and there is no other Global Administrator available. We require tenant-access recovery and escalation to the Microsoft 365 Data Protection team. The customer’s authorized representative is available to complete ownership verification.
Ask the frontline agent to:
- Create a support request and provide its case number.
- Associate it with the inaccessible tenant.
- Record the customer representative as the ownership-verification contact.
- Escalate it to Microsoft 365 Data Protection/Tenant Recovery.
Official partner guidance specifies that when there is no usable GDAP relationship and no other Global Administrator, the end customer must contact Microsoft Support.^1^
If the subscription was purchased entirely through a Microsoft reseller or CSP, contact that provider first. Microsoft’s support documentation directs customers whose subscriptions were all purchased through a partner to obtain support through that partner.^3^
Information to prepare privately
Have the following ready, but submit it only through the support case or directly to the assigned Microsoft representative:
- The tenant’s
onmicrosoft.comdomain. - The affected administrator’s known usernames or aliases, if available.
- Customer legal name and business contact details.
- Subscription, invoice, order, reseller, and payment information.
- Written authorization naming Artisteeq as the customer’s IT provider.
- Access to the customer’s registered contact email or telephone, if still available.
- Evidence of control over the customer’s verified custom domain and DNS.
- A customer representative who can respond directly to Microsoft.
DNS control and written authorization can support the investigation, but the available Microsoft documentation does not state that a DNS TXT record alone is sufficient or guarantee which documents Data Protection will accept. Wait for the assigned team’s instructions before adding or changing DNS records.
Do not publish invoices, payment details, administrator usernames, phone numbers, verification codes, or authorization documents in this Q&A thread. Community participants cannot access the tenant or perform the recovery; the actual verification and recovery must occur through the support case.^4^
Before calling, if the original admin username is known
Try Microsoft’s Self-Service Password Reset only if the username is known and recovery methods may have been configured. Microsoft’s tenant-lockout guidance recommends attempting SSPR before support escalation.^1^
If the username is unknown, no recovery method is available, or SSPR fails, proceed directly with the support route above rather than creating a replacement production tenant.
After access is restored
- Create at least two independently secured administrative accounts.
- Assign a Privileged Authentication Administrator so a locked-out Global Administrator can be reset.
- Require MFA and maintain separate recovery methods.
- Configure emergency-access accounts.
- Give Artisteeq only the least-privileged GDAP roles required.
Microsoft recommends retaining few Global Administrators while ensuring that another Global Administrator or Privileged Authentication Administrator can recover a locked administrator.^5^
