Family Safety organizer/child roles and Windows administrator rights are separate. Changing Family Safety settings does not change who is a Windows administrator on the laptop.
To change the laptop admin back to the parent account, sign in on that PC with an account that already has administrator rights. If the son's account is currently the admin, use that account first.
- Open Settings on the laptop.
- Go to Accounts > Other users.
- Under Other users, select the parent account.
- Next to Account options, select Change account type.
- Change it to Administrator and select OK.
- Then select the son's account and change it to Standard user.
Important: keep the number of administrator accounts limited. Administrators have complete control over the system and can change settings, install software, and affect security.
For Family Safety to work properly afterward, make sure the child's account is a standard user, not an administrator. That is the recommended setup for Microsoft Family Safety.
If Family Safety reporting or controls were turned off, also check the child's Microsoft account is still verified:
- On the child's device, open Start > Settings > Accounts.
- Select Verify and complete the prompts.
- If Verify does not appear, open Microsoft Edge and verify the account at verify your account.
If the parent account is not listed on the laptop yet, add it first:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
- Select Add a Microsoft account or Add a work or school account.
- Follow the prompts, then return to Accounts > Other users and change the account type.
