Subject: Urgent help recovering missing music files after OneDrive synchronization

On October 5, OneDrive began synchronizing my Desktop without my intending to use it for backup. After this occurred, hundreds of MP3 files disappeared from C:\Users\afent\OneDrive\Desktop\Music. My iTunes library still references the original file locations, but the songs cannot be found or played.

The missing MP3 files appear in the OneDrive Recycle Bin, with deletion dates around October 5. The Music folder remains, but most of its contents are missing. Completing synchronization did not resolve the problem. Restoring an individual song and downloading it works, but there are potentially thousands of files to recover.

I also attempted to use Restore your OneDrive, but the activity interface has behaved erratically and became blank while I was reviewing the recovery date.

Please help me determine the safest way to recover the missing files in bulk and investigate the synchronization issue before I make further changes.

    Hi Andrew,

Good day. What's important is your files are still on your OneDrive's Recycle bin, you may be able to recover them all without restoring each song individually.

    1. Pause OneDrive syncing for now to avoid further changes.
    2. Go to OneDrive online, open the Recycle Bin, select multiple MP3 files, and click Restore. If there are thousands, restore them in batches.
    3. Check C:\Users\afent\OneDrive\Desktop\Music to confirm the files are back. Before resuming sync, consider copying the recovered files to a separate folder outside OneDrive as a backup.

Since this started around October 5, I'd avoid changing more backup settings until your files are safe.

    Regards,
    Jhun

I see that your Music folder is located within your Desktop folder: C:\Users\afent\OneDrive\Desktop\Music

The default location for the Music system folder should be C:\Users\afent\OneDrive\Music, but it's OK to keep your music on your desktop as long as it's in a yellow manila folder.

If you can't select all files in the online Recycle Bin, try this:

    1. Select the first file in the Recycle Bin.
    2. Scroll to the last file in the Recycle Bin.
    3. Hold down the Shift key and select the last file to select all files.
    4. Scroll to the top and select "Restore".

Restoring your files may take a few hours.

The safest bulk-recovery path is to restore the deleted MP3 files from the OneDrive Recycle Bin first, then verify whether a full OneDrive restore is still needed.

    1. Start on the OneDrive website.
      • Search there first, because that is the main place where synced files are stored.
      • Use Search everything and search broadly, not only by exact filename. For music files, search terms like *.mp3 are not documented here, but searching by parts of names, dates, or other descriptors is supported.
    2. Restore the files in bulk from the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
      • On the left side of the OneDrive website, select Recycle bin.
      • If the missing MP3 files are listed there, select the items and choose Restore.
      • This is the safest first action because it restores deleted items back into OneDrive rather than making new moves manually.
    3. Also check the Windows Recycle Bin.
      • If files or folders were deleted from the local OneDrive folder on the PC, open Recycle Bin in Windows.
      • Select the files or folders, right-click, and choose Restore.
      • Important: files deleted from the cloud, including online-only files, do not appear in the computer Recycle Bin or Trash. Those must be restored from the OneDrive web recycle bin.
    4. If many files changed at once, use Restore your OneDrive.
      • On the top right of the OneDrive website, select Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive.
      • This can undo actions on files and folders from the last 30 days.
      • Since the deletions happened around October 5, this is the supported bulk rollback option if still within that 30-day window.
      • If the restore page becomes blank or unusable, avoid further large changes and continue with Recycle Bin restore first.
    5. Check the local device after restore.
      • Use File Explorer to search the computer for the files.
      • Check both the OneDrive-backed Desktop location and the Windows Recycle Bin.
      • If files were restored online but are not visible locally yet, allow sync time and verify again from the OneDrive website.
    6. Avoid risky cleanup while recovering.
      • Do not manually move, rename, or delete large numbers of files until recovery is complete.
      • This reduces the chance of creating more sync activity or making the recovery timeline harder to reverse.
    7. If files are not found in search or the OneDrive Recycle Bin, recovery is usually no longer possible through self-service.
      • For personal accounts, support agents cannot access files and cannot provide more help than the published guidance.
      • Continued searching with alternate filename spellings, descriptions, dates, and locations is the remaining supported step.

Given the current state, the safest order is:

    1. OneDrive web Recycle Bin bulk restore.
    2. Windows Recycle Bin check.
    3. Restore your OneDrive only if needed and still within 30 days.
    4. Verify restored files on the OneDrive website before making any folder changes on the PC.
