Are you using the Office apps on a Windows PC or on an Apple Mac computer?

    1

If you are using the Office apps on a Windows device:

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your licence/subscription then recognized correctly.

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, is your Office licence listed correctly there, or if that is a subscription, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

If you are using the Office apps on an Apple Mac computer:

What version of Microsoft Office do you have, is that a subscription to Microsoft 365 or a standalone version of Office like Office 2019, 2021 or 2024.

At the top left of your Desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

Reset the password for your personal Microsoft account to remove the temporary block, then use Word in the Chromebook’s web browser rather than an installed Office app.

    1. Unblock the account

    1. Open Microsoft’s account sign-in page in Chrome.
    2. Sign in with the personal Microsoft account used for Word.
    3. Follow the displayed identity-verification steps and reset your password. Microsoft documents password reset as the procedure for an account temporarily blocked because of unusual sign-in activity.^1^
    4. Try signing in again with the new password.

Not using the account for one month is not documented as a reason for deletion. Microsoft states that an old account may be deleted after more than two years without signing in, not one month.^2^

    2. If the message says the account is “locked”

Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked from Microsoft’s locked-account instructions.^3^

If the sign-in screen displays a link beginning with aka.ms/:

    1. Select that exact link.
    2. Complete the account-reinstatement form.
    3. Wait for the Microsoft Online Safety team to reply by email.
    4. Do not submit duplicate requests, because Microsoft says that can slow the review.^3^

If password reset and security-code verification both fail, use the When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account option on the unblock page; it provides additional recovery and support paths.^1^

    3. Return to the book on the Chromebook

    After access is restored:

    1. Open Chrome and go to www.microsoft365.com.
    2. Select Sign in.
    3. Use the recovered personal Microsoft account.
    4. Open Word, then locate the book under Recent or OneDrive.

On a Chromebook, Microsoft supports Word and the other Microsoft 365 applications through the web browser. The Windows and Mac desktop editions cannot be installed, and Microsoft’s Chromebook guidance says the Android Office applications are not currently supported.^4^

Do not post your email address, password, security codes, or book-sharing links in this public forum.
