Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This message is commonly caused by either an expired/suspended Microsoft 365 subscription or a payment method problem.
Try these steps in order:
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to your Services & subscriptions page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Check the Microsoft 365 section:
- If the subscription is expired, renew it.
- If it is active, continue to the next step.
- Go to your Payment options page.
- If the payment method shows an error, update it.
- Restart Word or another Office app and check whether the warning is gone.
If the warning still appears on a Windows PC:
- Run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Get Help on the same PC where Microsoft 365 is installed.
- It must be Windows 10 or later.
- Follow the prompts to troubleshoot the activation issue.
If that still does not fix it:
- Deactivate the Office install.
- Completely uninstall Office using the easy fix tool.
- Reinstall Office.
If the subscription was bought through a third party such as Apple, Google, or a retailer, billing and payment changes must be managed with that provider directly.
If access to the Microsoft account is blocked because the password or email is forgotten, use the sign-in helper tool. If more help is needed, use Contact Support.
